The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo 2027 runs from Friday 6 to Saturday 28 August 2027 on the Esplanade of Edinburgh Castle. The show lasts about 90 minutes and starts at 9:30 pm, with 6:15 pm performances on some dates. Tickets have been on sale since 31 August 2026, only through the organiser: the Tattoo is not sold on Viator. Book your seats and your hotel now, then fill the day with one of the 12 experiences below, checking the return time.
The Tattoo is the highlight of the Scottish summer: bagpipes, military units from many countries and a finale in which a lone piper stands on the castle ramparts. For 2027 the edition is called « The Same Heart Beat » and ticket sales opened on 31 August 2026. I am publishing this guide ten months ahead, because the best seats and the Old Town hotels go early.
I would rather be upfront: no Tattoo ticket can be booked on Viator, so I will not send you to an affiliate link for the show. Seats are bought on the official ticket office website. What I can do is help you fill the day before: the show starts at 9:30 pm, which leaves the whole morning and afternoon.
I went through the experiences open during the 23 days of the festival, then checked the possible return time for each one, so that your day does not collide with the evening. A visit like Edinburgh Castle, just above the Esplanade falls naturally before the show, whereas a 12 hrs 30 min excursion to Loch Ness means picking another day. The Viator prices shown below are prices observed in September 2026 for two adults: they may change before August 2027.
Why the Tattoo: the Pixidia angle
The first show dates from 1949 and the first official Tattoo from 1950, on the castle Esplanade, in front of around 6,000 spectators according to Wikipedia. The word « tattoo » is said to come from a 17th-century Dutch phrase, « doe den tap toe » (turn off the tap), the signal given to innkeepers so that soldiers would return to their quarters. The « Royal » title was granted in 2010, for the show’s 60th anniversary.
The organiser reports more than 200,000 spectators over the season. For 2027, according to the official announcement, the show brings together music and percussion as its common thread, with the Royal Navy in the spotlight. No detailed programme has been published to date: so I am not inventing any guest band or running order, and I suggest you follow the official website.
What to know about the evening. The show is at 9:30 pm, with 6:15 pm performances on some dates, including some Saturdays: check the official calendar before locking in your tickets. According to the price bands relayed by guides, seats start at around £55 and most fall between £80 and £145; the exact price is to be confirmed on the official website. Tickets are digital, with a maximum of 20 seats per online order.
The Tattoo is not the only August draw in Edinburgh: the Fringe and the other festivals overlap with it, which is why accommodation gets expensive. I come back to this in the practical tips.
The 12 experiences to book for Tattoo day
1. Edinburgh Castle: the guided tour right above the Esplanade
The castle looks down over the Esplanade where the Tattoo grandstands go up every summer, so visiting in the afternoon means seeing the setting before the show. I would pick the 10:00 am or 12:15 pm slot to keep the end of the day free. Do check the castle website to see whether the grandstand build changes the route in August.

2. The Royal Mile and Old Town: the small-group morning walk
A maximum of twelve people is what makes this walk enjoyable in the middle of August, when the Royal Mile is packed with festival-goers. The 10:00 am departure leaves you lunch and the afternoon before the evening, and the walk ends near Princes Street. It is also a good way to scout, on foot, the route to the Esplanade.

3. Chocolatarium: the chocolate break, ideal with children
It has the highest rating of the selection, and it makes a morning easy when you are travelling as a family. It sits on Holyrood Road, a short walk from Holyroodhouse Palace, so you can stroll up towards the castle later in the day. The Tattoo has no age limit, but the sound effects are loud: better to give the little ones a gentle morning.

4. Harry Potter locations on foot: two hours in the Old Town
The lowest price on the list and a short format that slots easily between lunch and a rest before the evening. Slots run from 10:30 am to 6:00 pm, which leaves plenty of leeway. The guide language depends on the option you choose.

5. Food tour: five tastings and a Lowland whisky before the show
With an 11:45 am or noon departure, the food tour becomes a proper lunch: five tastings, including a Lowland single malt, plus Scottish cakes and cheeses. After three hours of gourmet walking, you have the whole afternoon to rest before queueing for the Tattoo. It is the most expensive option on the list, but it replaces a meal.

6. Port of Leith Distillery: a tasting away from the centre
Leith is the only detour of the selection outside the Old Town, and it is worth the trip for a whisky in a calmer setting than the Esplanade in August. Slots run from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm, so they fit either before or after lunch. Plan to arrive ten minutes early.

7. Kelpies, Stirling and Loch Lomond: a full day that works with the evening
It departs at 8:15 am from Charlotte Square and returns around 5:15 pm based on the advertised duration, which leaves plenty of time for dinner before the Tattoo doors open. This is my pick for a full day on show day, because the return is not tight. The programme covers the Kelpies, Stirling Castle and Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park.

8. Outlander: the day on the filming locations
The 8:45 am departure on the Royal Mile and the 9 hrs 30 min programme bring the group back around 6:15 pm: it is doable on Tattoo night, as long as you do not dawdle. If you are aiming for the 9:30 pm show, plan a quick dinner and a change of clothes. Otherwise, keep this day for an evening without a show and take a breath.

9. Loch Ness, Glencoe and the Highlands: book it for a day other than the Tattoo
It leaves at 7:45 am and returns around 8:15 pm based on the advertised duration. To be frank, this does not work with Tattoo night, when you need to arrive 45 to 60 minutes before 9:30 pm. It is nonetheless the most popular excursion of the selection. Put it on a day without a show, or on the Sunday if the official calendar confirms there is no performance.

10. The Highlands on a private tour: the only option that bends to your evening
The price is for a private vehicle, not a seat, which makes it a choice for a group or a special occasion. In return, the timings are agreed with the operator: you can shorten the day to be back well before the show. It is the option for the Highlands on Tattoo night, without depending on a coach.

11. A 90-minute cruise on the Firth of Forth
Seeing the three Forth bridges from the water is the antidote to the crowds on the Royal Mile. The cruise leaves from South Queensferry, about twenty minutes from the centre: allow for the round trip and check the slot time when you book. A light outing, best placed in the early afternoon.

12. Ghost tour: mysteries, witchcraft and murders, for a night without the Tattoo
There is a single departure at 6:30 pm on the Royal Mile: the tour finishes well before 9:30 pm, but the margin is thin to reach the Tattoo queue. My advice is to book it on a night without a show, such as the Sunday according to the published calendar. The Tattoo is your gala evening; the ghosts can wait.

Planning the day. The morning visits (castle, Royal Mile, Chocolatarium, Harry Potter) and the midday food tour are no problem. The two excursions with a late return work out like this: the Kelpies and Loch Lomond finish around 5:15 pm, Outlander around 6:15 pm, and Loch Ness around 8:15 pm, which is too tight to arrive 45 to 60 minutes before 9:30 pm. These return times are estimated from the advertised durations, not guaranteed.
Access and entry. Entry is via Johnston Terrace, and the queue starts there. There is no parking at the Esplanade: count on Lothian Buses at George IV Bridge, about 300 m away, or Waverley station, about ten minutes on foot. Staying in the Old Town or near the Grassmarket lets you walk back after the show.
Weather and what to bring. The show goes ahead whatever the weather. Visitors report that it gets noticeably colder after sunset and that the seats are hard: bring layers, a poncho and a cushion. Umbrellas are banned, as are flash photography, alcohol and hot food from outside: the full list is on the official venue page. The effects (pyrotechnics, lasers, smoke, strobe lights) and loud noises can be difficult for sensitive people.
Seating. Some visitors recommend sections 8 and 9, rows K to P, to see both the castle facade and the formations. This is not official advice: compare it with the ticket office seating plan.
Accommodation. During the festivals, prices often double or triple, and a hotel at £120 out of season can exceed £400, according to guides.
