The Şeb-i Arûs ceremony in Konya runs from 7 to 17 December 2026, with the final night on 17 December, the anniversary of Mevlânâ’s death in 1273. According to the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the sema take place in the Sema hall of the Mevlana Cultural Centre, not at the mausoleum. Ticket sales opened on 9 October 2026, but no price has been published yet.
Checked on against the official sources cited (Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Konya Municipality, UNESCO, MGM).
Each year, from 7 to 17 December, Konya marks Mevlânâ, the mystic poet whose disciples founded the Mevlevi order. In 2026, the sema ceremony marks the 753rd anniversary of his death. According to the Ministry, tickets went on sale on 9 October, but the detailed programme and the price have not been published yet. Here is what you need to plan the trip, tell the ritual apart from the show, and avoid the mistakes we have seen in other guides.
1. A ritual, not just a show

The sema mevlevi: rite and dance
The sema mevlevi is the ritual dance ceremony of the Sufi order founded in Konya in 1273 by the disciples of Rumi. The whirling dervishes turn to ayin music: chant, ney flute, drum and cymbals. The sema mevlevi has been on UNESCO’s Representative List since 2008, and that status should guide how you behave on site. UNESCO dossier 00100, checked on 11 October 2026.
What to expect
- A religious ceremony that marks the death of a master: silence is expected.
- Ayin music played live, with chant, ney, drum and cymbals.
- Applause is discouraged during the ritual, according to travellers’ accounts and Excursionmania.
Viator, a booking platform, also sells an entry ticket to a sema ceremony in Konya. It is not the Ministry’s ticket office, so compare the exact content of the offer with biletinial.com before you pay. According to the Viator listing, the ceremony is held at the Irfan Civilisation Research Centre (IRFA), not in the Sema hall of the Cultural Centre. All sales are final and the ticket cannot be transferred. When we checked on 11 October 2026 at 4:15pm, six test dates between 7 and 17 December were open for two adults. We did not check the other dates, and availability can change before the day you pick.
2. Dates and tickets for 2026
The Ministry of Culture and Tourism confirms the cycle from 7 to 17 December 2026. The end date is fixed: 17 December is the day Mevlânâ died, in 1273 on the Gregorian calendar. The cycle does not follow the lunar calendar, so don’t confuse it with a moving Islamic festival.
Ticket sales opened on Friday 9 October 2026 at 10:00am, according to the Ministry, which points to biletinial.com. The Konya Municipality’s ticket site, ebilet.konyakultur.gov.tr, was not reachable when we checked (error 522), so biletinial.com is the platform that both the Ministry and the municipality cite.
We have not seen the online ticketing page itself. When we checked on 11 October 2026, the biletinial.com homepage did not show any Şeb-i Arûs event. Search for the ceremony with the site’s search box, and check the date and venue before you pay. The sale date comes from the Ministry, not from a check on biletinial.

Cultural and artistic events held in the other halls during the cycle are free, according to the same Ministry. That is not the case for the regular performances: the Mevlana Cultural Centre runs a paid sema every Saturday at 7:00pm, with tickets sold on biletinial.com (municipality, checked on 11 October 2026). The price does not appear on the pages we looked at.
Don’t build your day around a specific time. The Ministry has not published the 2026 schedule, and the programme page returned a 404 error when we checked. Once the programme is online, it is the reference.
3. Sema hall, museum and tomb: don’t mix them up
This is a common mix-up. The Mevlana Museum, with its green dome and Rumi’s tomb, is separate from the Mevlana Cultural Centre, where the sema ceremonies take place. The Ministry places the ceremonies in the Sema hall of the Cultural Centre. A guide that puts them at the museum, such as Selene, is wrong on this point.
The two sites are not far apart. A 2021 guide puts them about a kilometre apart, a distance we could not confirm from a recent source. To reach the museum, the Milliyet guide recommends the tram, Alaaddin–Adliye line, Mevlana stop.
The word « Mevlana » also names a festival. Lonely Planet (French edition) describes a peak in visitors from 3 to 17 December during the Mevlâna Festival. Those dates are not those of the official ceremony, so don’t book by them.
4. The Mevlana Museum: free entry, according to the press
The Milliyet guide, updated 13 January 2026, says entry to the mausoleum-museum is free and the museum opens at 9am every day, public holidays included. In winter, last admission is around 5pm. These are press reports, so check the opening times on site before you go.

5. Getting to Konya: train, flights, airport and timings
Konya is mostly reached by high-speed train. After the fare rise of 17 August 2026, Medyascope cites 458 TL between Ankara and Konya, and 1,442 TL between Konya and Istanbul, without giving the class or the direction of travel. The e-yasamrehberi site gives an economy fare of 1,460 TL for the same route to Söğütlüçeşme, and 1,615 TL to Halkalı. The gap is not explained. Treat these figures as rough guides and check them on the TCDD website before you book.
| Route | Fare (TL) | Journey time | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ankara to Konya | 458 (class not specified) | 1h 45m to 2h | Medyascope; My Turkey Adventure |
| Konya to Istanbul | 1,442 (class not specified) | About 5h | Medyascope (press) |

| Konya to Halkalı (departure 4:39pm) | 1,615 (economy) | 5h 26m | e-yasamrehberi (unofficial) |
Source: Medyascope (article of 17 August 2026) and e-yasamrehberi (timetables updated 17 August 2026), checked on 11 October 2026. No official TCDD fare could be read.
There are also flights between Istanbul and Konya. Search results indicate a flight time of 1h 10m to 1h 30m, with Pegasus and AJet departing from Sabiha Gökçen. We have not checked the flight times or fares.
Konya airport is about 18 km from the city centre. The HAVAŞ shuttle costs 220 TL for around forty minutes, but its price is undated. A taxi is estimated at 314 to 339 TL, roughly 25 minutes. International passengers need to go to the domestic flights exit to find the shuttle.
| Option | Price | Duration | Source |

| HAVAŞ shuttle | 220 TL (price not dated) | About 45 min | e-yasamrehberi (unofficial) |

6. December in Konya: cold, and dress modestly
December is cold. Statistics from Turkey’s State Meteorological Service (MGM), measured from 1927 to 2025, give an average of 1.8°C, average minimums of −2.2°C and close to ten rainy days a month. January is colder still. Pack warm layers and a waterproof.
| Indicator | December | January |
|---|---|---|
| Average temperature | 1.8°C | −0.1°C |
| Average maximums | 6.7°C | 4.8°C |
| Average minimums | −2.2°C | −4.1°C |
| Average rainfall | 43.0 mm | 37.3 mm |
| Rainy days (average) | 9.98 | 9.64 |

There is no written dress code. Travellers’ accounts recommend modest clothing, with shoulders and knees covered. In the tomb, visitors are given plastic shoe covers. Outlook Traveller (article from January 2024) notes that the Muslim women in its group covered their heads. These are customs people observed, not official rules. For photos, no official source settles the question: they are often banned during the whirling, so check on site.
7. Mevlânâ, the 753rd anniversary and UNESCO
In 2026, the ceremony marks the 753rd anniversary of Mevlânâ’s death on 17 December 1273, as the Ministry’s homepage notes. The sema mevlevi was proclaimed a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2005, then inscribed on the Representative List in 2008, under dossier 00100. The Mevlevi order, founded in Konya by Rumi’s disciples, saw its mevlevihane (lodges) closed in 1925. Public performances were allowed again from the 1950s.
The 2025 cycle had a particular feature: according to the Turkish press, the opening ceremony was held in Karaman on 6 December, before the final night in Konya. We have no confirmation of this for 2026, and nothing suggests it.
8. A possible itinerary and variations by traveller type
The plan below assumes you are staying in Konya. According to the press, the museum opens at 9am, and last admission in winter is around 5pm. So start at the Mevlana Museum as it opens. The Cultural Centre, where the ceremony takes place, is separate from the museum: the tram stops at the museum (Mevlana stop). The distance to the Cultural Centre is unconfirmed, so check the route on site.
For the evening, travellers recommend arriving early. Outlook Traveller mentions many speeches before the dance, and My Turkey Adventure describes hard benches and a ceremony of about an hour, without detail on the dancing part and without an official source. Dress in layers: December is cold in Konya.
If you are coming from Istanbul for the day, keep the journey in mind: about five hours of train each way, according to e-yasamrehberi. A return trip in a single day means roughly ten hours on the train, before the ceremony itself. We don’t recommend it for a first visit. One night in Konya gives you time to see the museum, the ceremony and the city centre without racing the clock.
The variations below are recommendations from our editorial team, based on the fares and timings above.
- First visit. Book a full night in Konya rather than a day trip from Istanbul. The museum and the ceremony fit comfortably into one day, if the 2026 programme confirms the date of your evening.
- Family trip. The ceremony is a religious rite that calls for silence. Explain to children that they should not clap during the ritual, and bring a warm layer for the long waits. The museum, which is free, is an easy stop before the evening.
- Tight budget. The Mevlana Museum is free according to the press, and cultural activities in the other halls during the cycle are free according to the Ministry. The Saturday sema, on the other hand, is paid: we did not find its price. For the trip from Ankara, the fare we found is 458 TL (class not specified). Check it on the TCDD website.
- Reduced mobility. We found no reliable accessibility information for the Cultural Centre or the mausoleum in the sources we checked. Ask the box office directly before you book.
Before you book, the official advice takes priority over any guide. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) advice for Türkiye, updated on 21 September 2026 and still current on 11 October, advises against all travel within 10 km of the Syrian border. It does not mention Konya. It warns of a high wildfire risk from April to October, and it describes strikes linked to the Iran–US conflict since 8 July, with possible flight cancellations and airspace closures across the Middle East.
To go further, our Turkey 2026 guide covers Istanbul, Cappadocia and the Turquoise Coast. If you are torn about Cappadocia, the red and green tour comparison will help you choose. Our safety analysis for Turkey adds to this official advice.
What other guides don’t tell you
The guides we read (Go Türkiye, content from 2021; Selene, from 2023 according to its content; Excursionmania; Lonely Planet French edition) mostly give out-of-date dates or places. Here are five facts checked against official sources that these pages either don’t give or contradict.
- Sales have been open since 9 October 2026 at 10:00am. The Ministry says so on its ticket page, and the municipality confirms biletinial.com. None of the guides we read gives this date. Ministry of Culture and Tourism (checked on 11 October 2026).
- Cultural activities in the other halls during the cycle are free. Excursionmania presents the sema as often free or inexpensive, without separating these activities from the sema itself. Ministry (checked on 11 October 2026).
- The ceremony takes place in the Sema hall of the Cultural Centre, not in the museum. Selene places it at the mausoleum. The Ministry settles the question, and its word prevails. Ministry (checked on 11 October 2026).
- The Saturday sema at 7:00pm is paid. The municipality states it in Turkish (« ücretli », paid), whereas Excursionmania presents it as often free or inexpensive. Konya Municipality, Mevlana Cultural Centre (checked on 11 October 2026).
- December in Konya is genuinely cold. Average of 1.8°C, average minimums of −2.2°C and close to ten rainy days, based on measurements from 1927 to 2025. Guides often give only an annual average. MGM (checked on 11 October 2026).
Practical information for planning Konya
Accommodation: we found no reliable, dated 2026 price for Konya hotels in December. Book early, and compare dates directly on the booking platforms. Package deals from tour operators exist, but their totals include transport: they are not a hotel price.
For onward travel (train, flight, shuttle), see section 5. The Ministry had not published the 2026 timetables when we checked, and we could not read the official TCDD fares: check these figures before you buy anything.
