The Wolfgangseer Advent 2026 runs from November 20 to December 20, 2026, along the shores of Lake Wolfgang, where three villages are linked by boat. Entry to the markets is free. Opening hours depend on the day: 1 pm on Wednesdays, 11 am on Thursdays and Fridays, and 10 am on weekends, with closing at 7:30 pm.
Checked on against the official sources cited (organizer, regional tourist office, boat and Schafberg operators).
Is the Wolfgangseer Advent worth the trip over a big Christmas market? It depends on what you’re after. If you want a compact market packed into one square or one street, this isn’t it. The Wolfgangseer Advent stretches across three villages on the lakeshore, St. Wolfgang, St. Gilgen and Strobl, and the boat is part of the route. If you’re willing to give a day to the lake, the lantern and, if you like, the Schafberg train, the visit has real charm, and entry is free.
This article gives the dates and prices published for 2026, day by day wherever the organizer provides them. Each table names its source and the date it was checked, October 25, 2026. Hours and prices from 2025 still circulate online: they don’t apply to 2026.
1. The lake, three villages, one outing

Lake Wolfgang, the lake of three markets
The Wolfgangseer Advent spreads along the shores of Lake Wolfgang in the Salzkammergut, across St. Wolfgang (Upper Austria), St. Gilgen and Strobl (Salzburg state). The lake crosses two states, which is why the information pages point to different regional tourism sites. The boat links the villages and is part of the experience: it’s the simplest way to get from one market to the next.
The idea is simple. Stalls and decorations are spread across each village, entry costs nothing, and your money goes to the boat, the Schafberg train and food and drink. To see where this event sits among other European markets, our guide to the best Christmas markets in Europe in 2026 gives a useful comparison.
St. Wolfgang, the lantern village
The village hosts the floating lantern (see section 4) and the departure station of the Schafberg train. The organizer announces lanes lit by candles and fire, braziers and local crafts. Parking is paid, including car parks P3 in the center and P7 near the Schafberg station.
- Free entry to the markets in all three villages.
- The boat links the villages: it’s the centerpiece of the visit.
- Village lighting dims at dusk on Wednesdays, in favor of candles.
To see both lakeside villages on an organized day, a Viator excursion from Salzburg passes through St. Gilgen and St. Wolfgang, then continues to Hallstatt. The product page, checked on October 25, 2026, gives the following details.
- Stated duration: 450 minutes (7 hours 30), travel time included. The listing describes it as a private excursion.
- Hotel pickup in Salzburg. The listing names several hotels and no single meeting point: check that yours is on the list before you book.
- Photo stop in St. Gilgen (10 minutes), time in St. Wolfgang (45 minutes), free time in Hallstatt.
- Guide in German and English, with an in-vehicle audio guide in several languages.
- Bookable for 2 adults or more, up to 4 hours before departure, with instant confirmation. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure.
- Not included: lunch, entrance fees and optional extras (salt mine, funicular, Hallstatt lake cruise, ossuary).

St. Gilgen and Strobl, two other moods
St. Gilgen is the village on the Salzburg side. Bus 150 from Salzburg stops at the Zwölferhorn cable car station, with a paid car park about 150 m away. It’s the easiest arrival by public transport. From St. Gilgen, the boat reaches St. Wolfgang, depending on the departures that day, which you should check on site.
Strobl is the village of nativity scenes, the Krippendorf. There’s a landscape nativity on the shore, historic nativity scenes on display and a living nativity, in a more rural atmosphere. It also hosts the « Wann’s dumpa wird im Dorf » event: every Wednesday, the regional office announces a candlelit, lamp-lit mood from around 4 pm. The 2026 dates for this event haven’t been published. Bus 546 links Strobl to St. Wolfgang.
If you only pick one village, choose St. Wolfgang for the lantern and the Schafberg departure. If you want to see the nativity scenes, add Strobl. On crowds, the most precise source we found is 5schaetze.at: it reports heavier traffic on Saturdays and Sundays, with possible queues at the boat landings (checked October 25, 2026).
2. 2026 hours: the day of the week matters
Opening times depend on the day. Wednesday starts at 1 pm, while weekends open at 10 am. The markets close at 7:30 pm on open days. On Mondays and Tuesdays the markets are closed, except December 7 and 8, 2026, which are special opening days.
| Day | Opens | Closes | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wednesday | 1 pm | 7:30 pm | Atmosphere « Wann’s dumpa » in Strobl, from around 4 pm; 2026 dates not published |
| Thursday and Friday | 11 am | 7:30 pm | Same hours on both days |
| Saturday and Sunday | 10 am | 7:30 pm | Schafberg train departures start at 9:20 am (see section 5) |
| Monday and Tuesday | Closed | Closed | Exception: December 7 and 8, 2026, 10 am to 7:30 pm |
Source: wolfgangseer-advent.at (organizer’s site), checked October 25, 2026.
Be careful with the 2025 dates still circulating: the 2025 season ended on December 21, 2025. For 2026, use December 20. A package page gives December 22, but the organizer and the regional office both say the 20th.
3. 2026 prices: what the lake and the mountain cost
Entry to the markets is free. Transport is where the money goes: the boat between villages, the Schafberg train and, for some, the lantern cruise. The amounts below come from the operator’s price list valid from January 7, 2026, and from the Schafberg operator’s listings checked on October 25, 2026.
| Service | Adult | Child | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Market entry | Free | Free | Three villages |
| WolfgangseeTicket (one ride per village) | €31.00 | €9.20 | Operator price list, valid from January 7, 2026 |
| Weekly boat ticket | €87.00 | Not checked | Useful if you stay several days |
| Lantern cruise, 45 minutes | €21.00 | €10.50 | Music and a storyteller on board, departs from St. Wolfgang |
| Schafberg train, return | €50.00 | €15.00 | Up to the Schafbergalm, 1,364 m |
| Schafberg train, one way | €30.00 | €9.00 | Children under 4 ride free, no seat |
Sources: operator price list for the boats (valid from January 7, 2026) and 5schaetze.at, checked October 25, 2026.
The adult weekly ticket costs €87 and the adult monthly ticket €274 on the same price list. The 2026 list also offers a « Mountain & ship 1 day » pass priced between €61 and €78.70 depending on the departure village: €61 from Gschwendt, St. Wolfgang or Ried, €73.40 from Strobl, €78.70 from St. Gilgen or Fürberg.
4. The floating lantern and the evening cruise
The St. Wolfgang lantern, 16 meters tall
The floating lantern, called the Friedenslicht-Laterne in the sources, stands 16 meters tall and floats in front of St. Wolfgang. It’s lit by about 0.5 km of LED strings, according to the regional office’s listing, and it switches on at nightfall, according to the organizer. Its name refers to the Friedenslicht (the Light of Peace) from Bethlehem, which ORF Oberösterreich passes on every year.
The easiest way to see it from the water is the lantern cruise. On November 25, 2026, the regional office lists a departure from St. Wolfgang at 4:15 pm, ending around 5 pm. The operator’s listing also gives Wednesdays December 2, 9 and 16, with departures at 4:15 pm and 5:15 pm, lasting 45 minutes, with music and a storyteller on board.
5. The Schafberg train, the mountain option

From the lake to the Schafbergalm, at 1,364 meters
The rack railway leaves from St. Wolfgang station and climbs to the Schafbergalm, at 1,364 meters. On the published timetable, the ride takes 25 minutes (leaving St. Wolfgang at 9:20 am, arriving at the Schafbergalm at 9:45 am). A tourism page from the operator gives 35 to 40 minutes: that’s an unverified rough estimate, so we use the timetable. During Advent, the train runs Wednesday to Sunday, from November 20 to December 20, 2026, then daily from December 26, 2026 to January 3, 2027.
Don’t confuse it with the Faistenauer Schafberg, another mountain in the state of Salzburg, with its own winter hike.
Wednesday to Friday timetable
| Departure from St. Wolfgang | Arrival Schafbergalm | Departure Schafbergalm | Arrival St. Wolfgang |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9:20 am | 9:45 am | 9:55 am | 10:20 am |
| 10:30 am | 10:55 am | 11:15 am | 11:40 am |
| 11:50 am | 12:15 pm | 12:35 pm | 1:00 pm |
| 1:10 pm | 1:35 pm | 1:55 pm | 2:20 pm |
| 2:30 pm | 2:55 pm | 3:15 pm | 3:40 pm |
| 3:50 pm | 4:15 pm | 4:35 pm | 5:00 pm |
Source: operator’s PDF timetable, 5schaetze.at, checked October 25, 2026.
On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, the timetable is denser. Ten rides are published, from 9:20 am to 3:50 pm. Four of them are marked « as needed and subject to availability »: 10:50 am, 12:10 pm, 1:30 pm and 2:50 pm. Don’t plan your return on one of these optional trains. From the Schafbergalm, descents run from 9:55 am to 4:35 pm, and the last arrival in the valley is announced for 5 pm.
Station events for 2026 aren’t published, as far as we know. The 2025 programme (visits from Saint Nicholas and the Christ Child, music groups, Christmas postcards) shouldn’t be taken as this year’s.
6. Getting there, parking and the motorway vignette
By train and bus from Salzburg
Take the train to Salzburg Hbf, then bus line 150 toward Bad Ischl and Lake Wolfgang. It serves St. Gilgen and Strobl. From Strobl, bus 546 reaches St. Wolfgang.
Another option: the regional train to Attnang-Puchheim or Stainach-Irdning, then Bad Ischl and bus 150. A hallstatt.net page on train access (a secondary source) reports works between Attnang-Puchheim and Bad Ischl from October 10 to November 2, 2026, with replacement buses. These dates haven’t been verified on oebb.at, and they end before the markets open: confirm the traffic status on oebb.at before you leave.
By car
From Salzburg, take the A1 and exit at Thalgau or Mondsee. From Vienna or Linz, exit at Regau. Parking is paid in all three villages. We don’t have a verified 2026 parking rate: the amounts on an older page are out of date, so we’re not reusing them. In St. Wolfgang, car parks P3 (center) and P7 (Schafberg station) are paid.
The motorway vignette
A vignette is required on the A1 and on Austrian motorways. According to secondary sources, the 2026 annual vignette costs €106.80, valid from December 1, 2025 to January 31, 2027, which covers the whole Advent period. The two-month vignette costs €32, and the ten-day one €12.80. These amounts aren’t published on the operator’s official site: confirm them on asfinag.at before you go.
Organizer and information
The organizer is Wolfgangsee Tourismus Gesellschaft m.b.H., Mondsee Bundesstraße 1a, 5360 St. Gilgen (Austria), phone +43 6227 2348, email [email protected]. It’s the contact for questions about the market and accessibility. For boat departures, which aren’t published in the sources we checked, use the operator number given in section 1. Source: wolfgangseer-advent.at, checked October 25, 2026.
7. Budget: planning one day for two adults
The market itself costs nothing. The main expense is transport on the lake and up the mountain. For two adults riding the Schafberg train return, that’s €100 (2 × €50). The boat between villages costs €31 per adult for the WolfgangseeTicket, which covers one ride per village. The number of rides depends on your route and is confirmed on site, so we don’t give a total for the boat.
- Food and drink: we have no verified price for mulled wine at Lake Wolfgang for 2026. Budget for it on site.
- Accommodation: we have no verified hotel rate for December 2026 on the lakeshore. Estimate your budget from booking sites, comparing dates.
- Entry: free at the markets in all three villages.
To keep costs down, take just one paid ride. The market can be visited for free, and the lantern cruise or the Schafberg train are optional extras.
8. A typical day, in order
Here’s a possible plan for a Saturday or Sunday that covers the lake and the mountain without a race against the clock. The times listed are the published ones; boat times should be checked on site.
- 9:20 am: first published Schafberg train departure from St. Wolfgang. You reach the Schafbergalm around 9:45 am and come back down to St. Wolfgang around 10:20 am, just as the markets open.
- 10:30 am to noon: St. Wolfgang market, lanterns and candles even by day, local crafts.
- Midday: boat crossing to St. Gilgen or Strobl, depending on the departures checked on site. The boat doesn’t publish its timetable during Advent.
- Afternoon: St. Gilgen market, then Strobl and its nativity scenes. Bus 546 links Strobl to St. Wolfgang if the boat isn’t running.
- Dusk: head back to St. Wolfgang to watch the lantern light up. The markets close at 7:30 pm.
On Wednesdays, the plan changes: the market opens at 1 pm, the lantern cruise leaves St. Wolfgang at 4:15 pm on the announced days, and the « Wann’s dumpa » event starts in Strobl from around 4 pm.
9. Depending on your travel style
- Families: the Schafberg train is the most memorable outing for children. Children under 4 ride free, without a seat, and the return child fare is €15. The family pages we consulted date from 2025: their activities aren’t guaranteed for 2026.
- Couples: Wednesday is the candlelit day, with lighting dimmed in favor of flames, and opening starts at 1 pm.
- Tight budget: entry is free. The boat is the main expense: choose one ride, or one departure village, and keep the Schafberg train as an option.
- First visit: the plan in section 8 covers the three villages and the Schafberg in one day. Without the Schafberg, nothing forces a time slot: you can take in the market at your own pace during opening hours.
- Reduced mobility: no official source describes ramps, accessible landings or reserved parking. We can’t guarantee accessibility. Contact the organizer at +43 6227 2348 before you go.
What other guides don’t tell you
The market doesn’t open at the same time every day: Wednesday starts at 1 pm, not at 11 am as most guides say, since they don’t distinguish between days (organizer wolfgangseer-advent.at, checked October 25, 2026). The points below come from official sources and are missing or wrong in the guides we read. Each one carries its source and consultation date.
- Hours that change by day. Thursday and Friday open at 11 am, weekends at 10 am, with closing at 7:30 pm on every open day. Several guides give « 11 am to 7:30 pm » with no distinction, or « 9 am to 5:30 pm » from a third-party source (organizer, checked October 25, 2026).
- A season ending on December 20, 2026. A package page gives December 22: the organizer and the regional office give the 20th (regional office listing 430005373, checked October 25, 2026).
- The full Schafberg train timetable. The operator’s PDF gives six rides a day from Wednesday to Friday, from 9:20 am to 3:50 pm, and ten at weekends, four of them optional. Guides often just say « winter train » (5schaetze.at, checked October 25, 2026).
- Precise 2026 boat fares. The adult WolfgangseeTicket costs €31 and the child fare €9.20, according to the price list valid from January 7, 2026 (5schaetze.at, Wolfgangsee Schifffahrt, checked October 25, 2026).
- A specific date for the lantern cruise. On November 25, 2026, the departure from St. Wolfgang is listed at 4:15 pm by the Upper Austria regional office, a date missing from the guides we checked (oberoesterreich.at, listing 430211486, checked October 25, 2026).
Practical information before you go
The Schafberg train can be cancelled because of snow, and winter travel in Austria calls for planning ahead.
Price depends on trip length and age; compare on the siteFrequently asked questions about the Wolfgangseer Advent 2026
When is the Wolfgangseer Advent 2026?
The market runs from November 20 to December 20, 2026, on the shores of Lake Wolfgang in the Salzkammergut. These dates come from the organizer and the regional office, checked on October 25, 2026. A package page gives December 22: it gets the end of the season wrong. Entry to the markets is free, and only the boat crossings and the Schafberg train are paid.
What time do the markets open?
On Wednesdays, the markets open at 1 pm. On Thursdays and Fridays, opening is at 11 am. On Saturdays and Sundays, it’s 10 am. Closing is at 7:30 pm on every open day. On Mondays and Tuesdays the markets are closed, except December 7 and 8, 2026, when they open from 10 am to 7:30 pm. Source: the organizer’s site wolfgangseer-advent.at, checked October 25, 2026.
How much does the boat between the three villages cost?
According to the operator’s price list valid from January 7, 2026, the WolfgangseeTicket costs €31 per adult and €9.20 per child, with one ride per village. The weekly adult ticket costs €87. The « Mountain & ship 1 day » pass ranges from €61 to €78.70 depending on the departure village. The number of rides depends on your route, and boat departures during Advent aren’t published: check them on site.
Does the Schafberg train run during Advent?
Yes. The rack railway runs Wednesday to Sunday from November 20 to December 20, 2026, then daily from December 26, 2026 to January 3, 2027. An adult return costs €50. The train can be cancelled for snow or low demand. Timetables for Wednesday to Friday are published; at weekends, four of the ten rides are optional. Source: operator 5schaetze.at, checked on October 25, 2026.
How do I get there from Salzburg without a car?
Take the train to Salzburg Hbf, then bus line 150 to St. Gilgen or Strobl. From St. Gilgen, the boat reaches St. Wolfgang; from Strobl, bus 546 also goes there. Check connection times before you leave, as boat departures during Advent aren’t published.
How long should I plan for?
Allow 4 to 8 hours depending on the package, boat included, according to the salzkammergut.co.at package page checked on October 25, 2026. The Viator excursion in section 1 lasts 450 minutes, or 7 hours 30 minutes, travel time included. It passes through both lake villages and then Hallstatt, so on its own it doesn’t cover a visit to the market.
Do the 2025 hours still apply in 2026?
No. According to a family page, the 2025 edition ran from November 22 to December 21, 2025, and its hours aren’t the 2026 ones. For 2026, the dates are November 20 to December 20, with hours by day of the week. For prices, use the 2026 operator price list, valid from January 7, 2026.
