Goodwood Revival 2026: Dress Code and How to Get There

Chichester has no direct Eurostar station and no major international airport on its doorstep: the circuit sits deep in the West Sussex countryside, about an hour’s drive south of London. Wherever you’re coming from, you’ll be combining two legs of the journey — first getting to the UK (or to London, if you’re already here), then covering the final stretch to Chichester by road or rail.

If London is your starting point, the train is hard to beat: a direct service from London Victoria takes about 1 hour 30 to 1 hour 32 (roughly six departures a day), or you can drive south via the A3 and A27 in around an hour outside peak traffic.

Flying in from further afield? London Gatwick is the more useful of the two main London airports for this trip: a direct Southern train to Chichester takes 58 minutes to 1 hour 17, with around 45 services a day. Heathrow handles more long-haul routes from North America, Australia and Asia, but the onward journey to Chichester takes longer and usually means a change. Driving up from mainland Europe? The Eurotunnel LeShuttle (Folkestone-Calais, a 35-minute crossing with your car on board) is the most flexible option if you plan on shopping the Revival High Street or bringing back a vintage find — LeShuttle is an official Revival partner and even sponsors the on-site Revival Cinema. Budget 2 hours 15 to 2 hours 30 of driving from Calais to Chichester. The classic Dover-Calais ferry (about 90 minutes at sea, then roughly 2 hours by road) is usually the cheapest crossing, with P&O Ferries and DFDS competing head-to-head. And if you’re coming up from western or central France, the Portsmouth-Ouistreham or Portsmouth-Cherbourg ferry with Brittany Ferries is worth a look: Portsmouth is only about 18 miles — roughly 30 minutes — from Chichester, the shortest final leg of any ferry route to this circuit. Before You Go

• A UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (UK ETA) has been required since 2025 for most visitors who don’t already need a visa — that includes every EU country plus the US, Canada, Australia and dozens more; since 25 February 2026, carriers must refuse boarding without one. It costs £16 to £20, is valid for 2 years, and needs sorting before you travel, whatever your route in.
• The UK drives on the left. If you’re bringing your own left-hand-drive car across the Channel, pack headlamp beam deflectors before you cross; if you’re flying in and renting on arrival, this isn’t something you need to think about.
• There’s no EV charging point on site at the circuit.
• Rail engineering works are planned for 19 and 20 September 2026, with replacement buses on some routes — worth double-checking timetables the day before you travel.

Nothing forces you to dress up to get onto the site. But in the Central Paddock, the only area with a genuinely strict dress code (it’s where the track, the pits and the mechanics are), the rule is firm: jacket and tie for men, dress or suit for women. Everywhere else, from late-1940s neo-Edwardian tailoring to mid-1960s mod style, vintage dress is strongly encouraged without being enforced — but skipping it means missing out on half the experience, according to regulars.

For Men, Decade by Decade

1940s: worsted wool or tweed suits, double-breasted jackets, pleated trousers, a slim belt rather than braces, two-tone brogues and a trilby hat. 1950s: grey flannel suits, striped shirts, polka-dot ties, argyle cardigans, and a fedora with a coloured band. 1960s mod style: bell-bottom trousers, black turtlenecks, berets, paisley-print shirts, Chelsea boots. Steer well clear of anything psychedelic à la Sgt. Pepper, 1970s looks, or modern trainers.

For Women, Three Looks That Always Work

The utilitarian style of the early 1940s (fitted suit, square shoulders, below-the-knee skirt) gives way by the end of the decade to the New Look: printed dress, rounded shoulders, cinched waist. The 1950s lean into the full-skirted, belted-waist dirndl dress, or the « Teddy Girl » look. The 1960s offer three distinct routes: a biker-chic leather jacket, a strict Jackie Kennedy-style suit, or the trapeze dress and go-go boots of the mod movement. A silk scarf, vintage sunglasses and a bold red lipstick often do most of the work, without having to invest in a full outfit.

Renting an Outfit Instead of Buying One

Several British costume hire companies ship period outfits ahead of the event: Cotswold Costumes (a Revival supplier since its very first edition in 1998), Masquerade Costume Hire, or Dressing-Up Box for RAF, Army and Navy uniforms. Allow at least 5 days for hire to cover shipping both ways — build in extra time if you’re ordering from outside the UK or Europe. In London, vintage shops Beyond Retro, Circa Vintage and Paper Dress Vintage can round out an outfit with genuine period accessories. On site, Betty’s Salons and Goodwood Barber offer 1940s hair and make-up by appointment, but demand runs high — book before you travel.

The Goodwood Motor Circuit opened in 1948 on the runways of a former RAF airfield that had been active during the Battle of Britain. It closed to competition in 1966, a victim of safety standards its original layout couldn’t meet — and it’s exactly that 1948-1966 window that the Revival has brought back to life every year since 1998, when Charles Gordon-Lennox (now the 11th Duke of Richmond) relaunched the site fifty years to the day after it first opened. The circuit stays frozen in its 1952 layout, chicane included, and no modern vehicle is allowed on the track for the whole weekend, bar emergency services.

The 2026 edition, running from 18 to 20 September, has an explicit national theme for the first time: Italy, under the banner « La Dolce Vita ». Maserati marks the centenary of its 1926 Targa Florio win, a daily parade brings together up to 300 pre-1967 Vespas for the brand’s 80th anniversary, and the Lavant Cup is renamed the « Battle of Modena » for a straight Ferrari-versus-Maserati contest. Sunday becomes a « Super Sunday » modelled on a modern Grand Prix weekend, closing with the RAC TT Celebration: F1 world champions Jenson Button and Jacques Villeneuve go wheel-to-wheel in identical Jaguar E-types. Dunlop becomes the Revival’s first-ever title partner in the process.

2026 Highlights

• A lineup of legends: Sir Jackie Stewart, Tom Kristensen, Jimmie Johnson (7-time NASCAR champion) and Giacomo Agostini on two wheels.
• The Freddie March Spirit of Aviation, a concours d’élégance for pre-1966 aircraft, enters its 22nd year with a Spitfire flypast every morning.
• Close to a billion pounds’ worth of vehicles on site, between the track and the 6,000 classic cars on display.

The circuit takes up a small part of the Goodwood Estate, 11,000 acres shared with the racecourse, the golf course, and above all Goodwood House, home to the Dukes of Richmond for more than 300 years, 10 minutes’ drive away. Its private art collection (Canaletto, Stubbs, Van Dyck) is open to visitors from April to October and takes about an hour and a quarter to see. The estate itself sits inside the South Downs National Park: the Halnaker windmill trail, several Sussex vineyards, and the open-air Weald and Downland Living Museum round out a full day without straying far by car.

In Chichester itself, the cathedral and its Roman city walls can be seen in a morning. A happy coincidence: the Chichester Festival Theatre opens its season with A Midsummer Night’s Dream on exactly 18 September 2026, the Revival’s opening day, turning the weekend into a cultural escape too. A few minutes away, Fishbourne Roman Palace holds the largest Roman residence ever discovered in Britain, with its famous « Cupid on a Dolphin » mosaic. And for anyone arriving by ferry, the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, home to HMS Victory and the Mary Rose, remains the most logical stop before heading on to the circuit.
