Until 31 December 2026 at 24:00 Beijing time, British passport holders can enter China without a visa for up to 30 days. As of 14 October 2026, no extension has been announced. After that date, the L visa remains the official route we know of. Specialist press puts it at around €111 for a single entry, to be reconfirmed.

Checked on against the official sources cited (Chinese embassy in France, French Foreign Ministry, gov.cn, FCDO) for the exemption. The L visa amount comes from specialist press.

The real question is not just « until when? », but « what if my trip runs past that date? ». For some travellers the answer fits in one sentence: nothing changes as long as you arrive before 31 December 2026. For everyone else, compare the standard visa, the transit option and the arrival formalities before you book. This guide separates what the official texts say from what specialist press and guides report, and what remains uncertain.

1. Who can enter without a visa, and for which purpose

The official conditions for the exemption

No visa fee 30 days maximum Ordinary passport Until 31 Dec 2026, 24:00 Beijing time

The notice from the Chinese embassy in France dated 4 November 2025 sets the framework: visitors on the list can enter without a visa for a stay of up to 30 days, for one of five purposes: business, tourism, family visit, exchange visit and transit. Embassy notice, 4 November 2025. The French Foreign Ministry’s China page, updated on 15 September 2026, repeats the same rule and specifies that only ordinary passports are accepted.

If you hold a British passport: the UK was added to the list from 17 February 2026, with the same 31 December 2026 end date. The Chinese Foreign Ministry announced this at its briefing of 15 February 2026 (see section 3). The embassy notices we read were written with French nationals in mind, so check the passport-type details on the embassy’s current notice and on the FCDO China travel advice before you travel.

What you need to meet

  • An ordinary passport that is still valid. Emergency and service passports are excluded.
  • A purpose from the official list. Paid work, long-term study and journalism are not part of it.
  • A stay of 30 days or less, counted from the day after entry (embassy Q&A of 13 November 2025).
  • Entry through any open port, by air, land or sea (same source).

For a business or visit trip, the rule is the same: the purpose must match what you actually do there. A holiday presented as a business visit is not covered by the exemption, and that kind of false declaration is what Decree 841 targets (section 7).

Pixidia tip: declare the real purpose of your trip. Decree 841 provides for a non-entry ban of 1 to 5 years in case of false declaration, and the rule does not target tourism.

If you enter before 31 December 2026 and have a free day in Beijing, a private visit to the Great Wall at Mutianyu can fill it. The price shown is the one listed on Viator on 14 October 2026, for two adults. The tour includes entry tickets and bus transport, hotel pickup within Beijing’s 4th Ring Road (a supplement may apply beyond it), and an English-speaking guide, unless you choose the driver-only option without a guide. Lunch and tips are not included. The tour does not change the entry deadline: it has to fit within the 30 days of your stay.

2. Until 31 December 2026: the exemption timeline

The exemption for France was first announced for a shorter period, then extended to 30 days at the end of November 2024. It was extended in November 2025 until 31 December 2026. The table below lists the steps that official texts or their press relays let us date. It helps you understand how past announcements came out, not guess what comes next.

Source: Chinese embassy in France notice and French Foreign Ministry (France Diplomatie), checked on 14 October 2026. The 2024 dates come from the press and the May 2024 notice, not from the November 2025 notice.

The end date is therefore known to the minute: 31 December 2026 at 24:00 Beijing time, which is 16:00 in London and 17:00 in Paris on the same day. The rule covers entries made before that time. A flight landing on 1 January 2027 does not qualify, whatever the planned length of the stay.

The 30-day count starts the day after arrival. In practice, a traveller who arrives on 20 December 2026 for a 30-day stay will see the stay run past the end date. The sources we read cover entries made before 31 December, and do not say what happens to a stay that runs past that date. Don’t build your itinerary on an interpretation: have the embassy confirm it before you book.

3. After 31 December 2026: what is announced and what isn’t

What the sources say, and what they don’t

None of the official sources we checked on 14 October 2026 announces an extension beyond 31 December 2026. The Chinese Foreign Ministry, the embassy in Paris and the French travel page give no new date. An independent aggregator, chinavisacheck.com, shows « Not announced yet » at its last check on 13 October 2026. That finding holds for that date only: it guarantees nothing for what comes next.

There are precedents. An extension to twelve countries, France included, was announced in spring 2024. The extension to the end of 2026 was announced on 3 November 2025 by the spokesperson. No comparable announcement has been made yet for 2027. Past timing is not a rule, and the absence of an announcement on this date does not mean a refusal.

The Russia precedent does not transfer

On 20 May 2026, the spokesperson announced that the exemption for Russia was extended until 31 December 2027 (Shanghai municipal government relay). That scheme is bilateral and based on reciprocity. The scheme for France is unilateral: Beijing decides alone. A 2027 date for Russia proves nothing for France or the UK.

What changes for other countries

Canada and the UK were added to the list from 17 February 2026, until 31 December 2026, according to the Foreign Ministry spokesperson’s briefing of 15 February 2026. Both remain subject to the same deadline: one shared end date of 31 December 2026 for the whole unilateral list.

Bottom line: anything after 2026 is an assumption, not an announcement. A renewal is plausible, but France and the UK must appear in a published decision before you can count on it.

4. Plan B: the L visa for a 2027 trip

If your stay runs past 31 December 2026, or you want to stay more than 30 days, the L visa is the official route we know of. You apply before you travel, at a visa centre. The visa you request must match the real purpose of your trip; the texts we read do not describe the work rules that apply to the L visa.

Where and how to apply

The Paris visa centre publishes a document list dated 26 August 2026: passport with 6 months’ validity and 2 blank pages, photo 48 x 33 mm, return ticket, hotel booking or invitation letter, travel insurance, and proof of professional status for applicants over 18. Paris centre procedure (visaforchina, 26 August 2026), consulted 14 October 2026. The page gives neither fees nor opening hours: check them on the centre’s website. If you are applying from the UK, the London centre’s list is the one that applies to you. Compare it with the Paris list before you go.

A 2023 source gives the London centre as 12 Old Jewry, London EC2R 8DU. That address comes from an older notice, so reconfirm the address, the appointment system and the opening hours before you travel.

Cost and processing time

According to specialist press, the L visa costs €45 in consular fees, with a reduced rate valid until 31 December 2026, plus €66 in centre service fees, so €111 for a single entry. We have not cross-checked this against the consular notice of December 2025, which we could not open: reconfirm it on the centre’s website before paying anything. The express rate is reported at €156 to €178 depending on the category.

Processing time is another open point. One secondary source mentions about six working days for a complete file, and around ten days in practice. Plan for the high end. An intermediary charges about €240 for standard service, according to action-visas, an amount we have not checked with another provider.

What we don’t know: we did not open the consular notices on fees directly. The fingerprint waiver for short-stay visas, reported by a press source as maintained until 31 December 2026, has not been confirmed in an official text. Don’t promise it to your travellers.

5. Arrival card, passport and insurance: the formalities before you fly

The digital arrival card

Since 20 November 2025, travellers must enter their arrival details online. The official channels are the website of the National Immigration Administration (NIA), the « NIA 12367 » app and the WeChat and Alipay mini-programmes. The form asks for your flight, your port of entry, the address of your first night, the purpose and length of the stay, and a photo of your passport’s identity page. Embassy notice of 28 November 2025.

Paper forms and kiosks are still accepted on arrival for those who did not complete the card online. This is not a way around the rule: the embassy allows completion on arrival, and one guide warns that it can slow down the queue. Websites that sell the card present it as a paid service; the official channels above are not those sites.

Open point: guides give different filing windows for the card (24 to 72 hours before the flight). No official source we checked sets a minimum. In practice, fill it in after you have booked your first night, in the days before the flight.

The passport: the validity to aim for

France Diplomatie asks for a passport valid for at least six months, counted from your exit from China. The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) counts from arrival, and at least one travel guide counts from entry. No official text settles the difference. To avoid any risk, aim for six months after your planned exit date: it is the most protective rule, and it only costs you a new passport if yours expires too soon.

The return ticket and the first night

The return ticket, or a ticket to another country, is requested in the French Foreign Ministry’s travel advice. No minimum amount is set. A dated, confirmed ticket is better than a pending booking. As for accommodation, the address of your first night is requested on the arrival card: book it before you fill in the form.

Insurance: a requirement that contradicts itself

The consular texts we read do not require insurance to enter without a visa. The French Foreign Ministry’s « China: travel advice, entry and stay » page, however, considers a policy covering medical costs and repatriation « essential » before any trip. Evaneos, for its part, calls insurance « strongly recommended ». We present both wordings without choosing between them.

The financial risk does not depend on the wording. A Belgian comparison site cited in our sources estimates that one night in hospital can exceed €500, and premium cards do not always have limits or reimbursement timelines that cover a hospital stay with upfront payment. Check the cover before you travel.

6. Accommodation: hotel, private host or rental

The registration requirement depends on the type of accommodation. In a hotel, registration is done automatically. For a private home or a rental, the rule is stricter: a declaration within 24 hours of arrival, provided for by the law on the administration of entry and exit, and reminded by France Diplomatie on its China page, checked on 14 October 2026.

Since 21 September 2026, according to VisasNews, this declaration can be made online anywhere in the country. Older guides still tell you to go to the public security bureau. We did not find an official text confirming the amount of a possible fine.

If you change accommodation after filling in the arrival card, fill it in again with the new address. Some travellers also report that the officer asks for your first address on arrival: keep the proof of each booking on your phone.

7. Declaring the right purpose: what Decree 841 provides

The Administrative Regulations on Entry and Exit, published on gov.cn on 31 July 2026, took effect on 15 September 2026. Article 5 provides that a foreigner who has submitted false documents or made false declarations when applying for a visa or at entry can receive a non-entry order of 1 to 5 years. The full text is available on the State Council website, checked on 14 October 2026.

For a traveller who enters without a visa, the risk is not tourism, which is a listed purpose. It lies in a declaration that does not match what they actually do: a business trip presented as tourism, or paid work during a family visit, for example.

The purposes that require a suitable visa are paid work, long-term study and journalism. A July 2026 alert, relayed by a press source, recalls the ban on any work for visitors without a visa; we did not find the corresponding official text. Treat it as a reminder of an existing rule, not as news.

8. The 240-hour transit: a stopover, not a stay

The 240-hour visa-free transit, which is 10 days, is separate from the exemption. It is for a traveller who is leaving for a third country on a confirmed onward ticket. The list has covered 57 countries since 20 August 2026, according to the Shanghai municipal announcement relaying the ministry. Press reports checked on 14 October 2026 say France is included, but the announcement does not name it: confirm this before you book.

This is not a holiday stay. For a few days between two flights, transit is an option; for a two-week trip, the exemption or the L visa remains the route.

9. Budget: what a visa-free entry costs, and what it doesn’t

On paper, entry without a visa is free. The real budget is spent elsewhere. Here are the items to plan for, with how certain each one is.

  • Visa: €0 for the exemption, under the conditions described above. Certain, for the validity period.
  • Arrival card: no fee on the official channels, according to the sources we checked. Commercial sites sell it as a service: avoid them.
  • L visa: €111 for a single entry, according to specialist press, plus travel costs to the centre or an intermediary’s fee. To be reconfirmed.
  • Insurance: varies with the cover you choose. With no official figure, budget for at least hospital and repatriation cover.
  • Accommodation and local transport: your own budget. Mobile payment works with foreign cards on Alipay and WeChat Pay, according to 2025-2026 sources relayed by blogs. Some guides mention fees on payments above 200 yuan: check with your bank.

A stay running past 31 December is not settled by the texts we read: they cover entries made before the deadline, with no precise rule for what comes after. For entry in 2027, the L visa remains the only official route we know of, to be applied for before you travel. Allow about six working days for processing, around ten in practice according to secondary sources.

10. What to watch for before the end of the year

This article reflects the sources as of 14 October 2026. Three signals would tell you whether the rule changes, and they are worth following before you book a trip after 31 December:

  • An announcement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, who announced the last extension on 3 November 2025.
  • A notice from the Chinese embassy in France, which publishes the reference legal text for France.
  • An update to the French Foreign Ministry’s China page, last changed on 15 September 2026.

Without one of these announcements, the safe scenario remains the end of the exemption on 31 December 2026 at 24:00 Beijing time. An extension would be good news, but not a guarantee before it is published.

The Mid-Autumn Festival took place in late September 2026; our guide to the 2026 Mid-Autumn Festival in China is useful background reading.

What other guides don’t tell you

Five points, four checked against official texts and one reported by the specialist press, often missing or incomplete in the guides we read.

  • False declaration: a non-entry ban of 1 to 5 years. Decree 841 (Article 5) provides for this penalty, in force since 15 September 2026. Guides talk about « stricter rules » without giving a figure. Text of the decree on gov.cn (checked on 14 October 2026).
  • All open ports, not just Beijing and Shanghai. The exemption covers entries by air, land and sea. Embassy in France Q&A (13 November 2025, checked on 14 October 2026).
  • The arrival card goes through the official channels, and paper is still accepted. Commercial sites sell it, but the embassy points to the NIA website, the NIA 12367 app and two mini-programmes. Embassy notice (28 November 2025, checked on 14 October 2026).
  • Accommodation can be declared online across the country since 21 September 2026, according to the press. The information comes from a specialist press relay and needs confirming against the official text. VisasNews (checked on 14 October 2026).
  • The 30-day count starts the day after entry. Most guides say 30 days without saying where the count starts. Embassy Q&A (13 November 2025, checked on 14 October 2026).

Frequently asked questions about visa-free China

Until when can British travellers enter China without a visa?

The exemption applies until 31 December 2026 at 24:00 Beijing time, according to the Chinese embassy in France notice of 4 November 2025 (notice checked on 14 October 2026). The French Foreign Ministry confirms this date on its page updated on 15 September 2026. The UK was added to the list from 17 February 2026, with the same end date. As of 14 October 2026, no extension has been announced.

How long can you stay without a visa?

30 days at most per stay, with the count starting the day after entry, according to the embassy’s Q&A of 13 November 2025. Beyond 30 days, a visa suited to your purpose is required. No official source we checked confirms an extension on the spot: don’t plan one into your itinerary.

Can you travel in January 2027 without a visa?

Not as things stand. No official source we checked on 14 October 2026 announces an extension beyond 31 December 2026, and answering « yes » would be a guess. If your trip falls after that date, the official route we know of is the L visa, whose cost is detailed in section 4.

Do you need an arrival card?

Yes. Since 20 November 2025, travellers must enter their arrival details on the NIA website, in the NIA 12367 app or through the WeChat and Alipay mini-programmes (embassy notice of 28 November 2025). Paper forms and kiosks are still accepted on arrival. The filing window varies between guides: no official source sets one.

Do you need insurance to enter without a visa?

No consular text we checked requires insurance to enter under the exemption. The French Foreign Ministry’s « China: travel advice, entry and stay » page, however, considers a policy covering medical costs and repatriation « essential », as checked on 14 October 2026. We recommend a hospital and repatriation policy bought before you travel.

How much does a standard Chinese visa cost from the UK?

According to specialist press, €45 in consular fees with the reduced rate valid until 31 December 2026, plus €66 in centre service fees, so €111 for a single entry. This amount needs reconfirming on the centre’s website before any payment, because we could not open the original consular notice.

What should you declare if you stay with a host or in a rental?

Hotel registration is automatic. For a private home or a rental, the declaration must be made within 24 hours of arrival, at the public security bureau or, since 21 September 2026 according to VisasNews, online. No official text we checked confirms the amount of a possible fine.

Is an emergency or service passport enough?

No. Only an ordinary passport is accepted for the exemption, according to the French Foreign Ministry’s travel advice checked on 14 October 2026. Emergency and service passports are therefore excluded. If you hold another type of passport, check with the embassy or a visa centre before you travel, as the exemption does not apply to you.

Can you make a 10-day stopover without a visa?

The 240-hour transit exists. The list has covered 57 countries since 20 August 2026, according to the Shanghai municipal government. The press places France among them, but the announcement does not name it: check before you buy a ticket. Transit requires a confirmed onward ticket to a third country and a passage through one of the 65 designated ports. It is not a holiday stay.
