The TGV M makes its inaugural trip between Paris-Gare-de-Lyon and Marseille-Saint-Charles on Friday 6 November 2026, according to AFP, which relays the SNCF press invitation. Its trainsets offer up to 740 seats, about 17% more than the TGV Duplex (740 vs 634 seats according to Ulysse). No timetable, fare or sales date published yet.

Checked on against the press reports and releases cited (the SNCF pages could not be accessed during the check).

After several delays, the TGV M is due to make its inaugural trip on the Paris-Marseille line on 6 November 2026, on an SNCF press invitation relayed by AFP. Between the announced date and the moment you can buy a ticket, some things are still unclear: timetables, fares, sales date, intermediate stops. This article separates what is announced from what is not, with figures and sources, then explains what the new trainset changes for a traveller between Paris and Marseille.

1. A date announced, an inaugural trip, not yet a ticket on sale

The schedule: what was announced on 14 October

On the evening of 14 October 2026, SNCF sent the press an invitation to the inaugural trip of the TGV M, on Friday 6 November, from Paris-Gare-de-Lyon to Marseille-Saint-Charles. AFP relayed the news straight away (Boursorama / AFP). The invitation includes SNCF executives and Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot, which makes it more of a communications event than an opening to the public.

An inaugural trip is not the opening of sales. Several outlets talk about a “commercial launch”: that is premature for now. Only one source, TourMaG, mentions passengers boarding from Monday 9 November. No other source repeats it, and SNCF has not confirmed it in the documents we checked.

  • Inaugural trip: Friday 6 November 2026, announced
  • Passenger boarding: from 9 November, but only one source
  • Commercial timetables and fares for the TGV M: not published
Pixidia tip: don’t book a TGV M based on a press article. Until SNCF publishes its offer, the SNCF booking engine is the one that counts, and only the trains it shows are the ones that matter.

Beyond the train ticket: if your arrival in Marseille leaves you a free day, this excursion from Marseille is an option independent of the train. The dates we checked (22 and 29 October) come before the 6 November inaugural trip: check availability before you book.

The calendar is therefore a double one. On one side, a press date that is solid and relayed by several outlets. On the other, an opening to the public that has no official confirmation yet. The table below keeps that distinction, date by date.

2. What the trainset changes: 740 seats, two levels, a bistro

A longer trainset, up to 740 seats

The announced trainset can carry up to 740 seats in its maximum configuration, about 17% more (740 vs 634 seats according to Ulysse) than the TGV Duplex. It has nine carriages, against eight for the Duplex, according to Voyages d’Affaires. The manufacturer, Alstom, describes a model from the Avelia Horizon range.

740 is a maximum per trainset. No final split by class or carriage plan has been published. For a double trainset, the sources disagree: TourMaG gives 1,240 seats, while AFP speaks of more than 1,400 passengers. We are not picking one: the figure for a double trainset still needs checking at the time of launch.

The manufacturer and SNCF also announce a bistro on two levels, enlarged picture windows, adjustable mood lighting, individual sockets and next-generation Wi-Fi, advertised as 5G. These are announcements made before launch: no in-service measurement has been published yet. For more on the trainset, read also our article on the 740-seat TGV INOUI, with 5G Wi-Fi and recycling.

Pixidia tip: if Wi-Fi or a socket matters for your journey, don’t count on it until the first passenger reports are in. Check that these features are listed when you book, once SNCF publishes them.

The table below groups the service facts with their level of confirmation. It separates what is confirmed by several sources from what rests on a manufacturer or a single editorial team.

3. The price: no TGV M fare grid published, existing fares to compare

What we know about the price, and what we don’t

No fare specific to the TGV M has been announced. Prices follow the dynamic pricing of TGV INOUI: the earlier you buy, the more often the fare stays low, and the last seats cost more. The press reports an average rise of about 1% on 2 January 2026 on TGV INOUI and OUIGO, unrelated to the TGV M launch (Voyages d’Affaires).

Any “TGV M” price you read elsewhere, without a published SNCF grid, is a guess. The only real way to compare is to wait for sales to open and check the fare for the day you travel. For festive-period sales dates, our article on the opening of SNCF Christmas 2026 sales has the details.

  • Booking early is still the most reliable rule on TGV INOUI
  • The cheapest fares may be non-exchangeable and non-refundable
  • The Avantage card does not apply to OUIGO

The table compares the existing offers on the same line while we wait for a TGV M grid. Prices are those published by each operator, without assuming they will stay the same after the launch.

For the Avantage card, the 30% discount covers TGV INOUI and Intercités. For the adult version, it is not valid on weekdays for a one-way ticket without a child, so read that before you buy the card. No exclusion of the TGV M has been published, but no source confirms one either. Check the SNCF page before you count on it.

4. Luggage and bikes: the rules to know, and those still to confirm

Luggage: the TGV INOUI dimensions

According to the dimensions listed for TGV INOUI (the SNCF Voyageurs page was not accessible when we checked), you can take up to two bags of 70 × 90 × 50 cm, plus one carry-on bag of 40 × 30 × 15 cm. These dimensions apply to the line today. Nothing suggests they will change with the TGV M, but the official page is still the reference to check before you travel.

According to Journal du Geek, the minimum fine for non-compliant luggage is €50, capped at €150.

Bikes: booking, covers and announced bans

According to Journal du Geek of 13 October 2026, a bike that does not fold must be reserved on TGV INOUI for €10 per journey, subject to availability. A folded or dismantled bike in a cover of 90 × 130 cm travels free, without a reservation. This point rests on this source alone: check it in the booking process before you travel.

The same article announces, from 13 December 2026, a ban on certain vehicles on TGV INOUI and Intercités: bikes over the standard size (185 cm long, tyres no wider than 6 cm), fatbikes, bikes with more than two wheels, gyropods and hoverboards. No other source we read repeats this measure. It needs confirming on the SNCF website before you plan to travel with a bike in December.

Pixidia tip: if you travel with an e-bike or a fatbike, don’t rely on this article alone. Ask SNCF before you book, and keep a backup transport plan.

One useful detail: recumbent bikes, tricycles, tandems, cargo bikes and trailers are already banned on all trains, according to the same article. If that’s you, the TGV M won’t change the rule.

5. Stations: Paris-Gare-de-Lyon, Marseille-Saint-Charles and the rest of the route

Marseille-Saint-Charles, announced as the terminus

Marseille-Saint-Charles is the announced terminus for the inaugural trip. The station is 1.6 km from the city centre: allow 15 to 20 minutes on foot via the grand staircase, or about 7 minutes by metro on line 1, according to Made in Marseille. Buses 52, 56 and 83 and taxis also serve the station.

An overnight closure is announced: rail traffic will be halted at Saint-Charles on the night of 13 to 14 December 2026, while the signal box is modernised. One outlet gives “Saturday 13 December”, but 13 December 2026 is a Sunday. Check the date on the SNCF Gares & Connexions website before you schedule a departure or return around that night.

Pixidia tip: for a trip to Marseille-Saint-Charles planned in December, leave a comfortable margin between your arrival and your appointment, in case connections are disrupted.

Aix-en-Provence TGV, Avignon, Lyon: no stop announced

No intermediate stop is announced for the TGV M in the sources we checked, whether at Lyon, Avignon or Aix-en-Provence TGV. The journey is presented as a direct link between Paris-Gare-de-Lyon and Marseille-Saint-Charles. Avignon and Aix-en-Provence TGV are also served by OUIGO, TGV INOUI and Trenitalia. Don’t build an itinerary around an intermediate stop until SNCF publishes one. For Lyon, the sources don’t say which station is concerned: the inaugural trip leaves from Paris-Gare-de-Lyon, but a possible stop in Lyon still needs confirming. If your arrival in Marseille leaves you a free day, our selection of the best experiences in Marseille helps you plan it.

6. What it changes for your travel style

You take the train between Paris and Marseille regularly

For regular trips, the change is about consistency of the equipment more than comfort. The TGV M adds seats to the line, but it arrives gradually: thirteen trainsets are planned by the end of 2026, according to projections made before the postponement. A regular traveller can’t count on a particular trainset until the published timetable shows one. The Avantage card remains the clearest way to cut the cost of a repeated journey.

You’re travelling as a family

With a child, the Avantage card conditions are less restrictive: the discount applies every day, under SNCF’s rules. For OUIGO child tickets, the base fare announced at €8, subject to Ulysse, can’t be compared directly with TGV INOUI. Check the exchange and refund rules before you buy, especially if your plans might change and you need another train.

You’re looking for the lowest fare

As the TGV M has no fare yet, the useful comparison today is between existing operators. Trenitalia announces tickets from €27 on Paris-Marseille, with four return trips a day. OUIGO announces base fares from €10 for adults, subject to Ulysse. These low fares come with trade-offs: little or no exchange, no free refund. Compare the real cost of a flexible ticket, not just the headline price.

You’re travelling with a wheelchair user

This is the profile that needs the most care. No official data on TGV M accessibility has been published yet. The debate is about platform height: 550 mm in France, against 760 mm in the UK, Belgium and the Netherlands. The specialist blog Cross Border Rail judges access “not ideal but legal”. That is not a regulator’s position, and no SNCF source confirms it.

At the station, the Marseille Tourist Office says Marseille-Saint-Charles is open every day in 2026, with assistance for passengers with reduced mobility. That assistance has to be booked in advance with SNCF: don’t count on help on the spot, and keep a backup plan for the journey.

You’re travelling by bike

This is the profile most exposed to the announced changes. A bike that doesn’t fold must be reserved; a folded bike in a cover goes without a reservation. If your bike is over the standard size, don’t buy a ticket based on this article: the 13 December measure isn’t repeated by any other source. Wait for official confirmation.

7. Five mistakes to avoid with the TGV M

  • Reading “commercial launch” and assuming tickets are on sale. 6 November is an inaugural trip for invited press, not the opening of sales.
  • Booking a trip for 2 November. Some rail bloggers announce two return trips that day, but no outlet has confirmed it and SNCF has not published any confirmation.
  • Keeping 1 July 2026 as the date. It was dropped in favour of autumn, announced on 11 September 2026. Plenty of older articles still quote it.
  • Taking 1,400 seats per trainset. The AFP figure refers to a double trainset and conflicts with TourMaG’s. The maximum per trainset is 740 seats.
  • Thinking flights between Paris and Marseille are banned. The 2021 Climate and Resilience Law only targets journeys for which a rail alternative exists in under 2h 30. Paris-Marseille, around 3h 03 on a classic TGV INOUI, remains open to air travel. To compare with flying, see our update on French airports facing the Middle East crisis.

What other guides don’t tell you

Articles on the TGV M often repeat the same information, sometimes wrong or out of date. The most common mistakes are covered in section 7. Here are the points it doesn’t cover, with their source and the date we checked them.

  • Public boarding on 9 November rests on a single source. TourMaG is the only outlet to announce it. No other source repeats it, and SNCF has not confirmed it in the documents we checked (TourMaG, 15 October 2026; checked on 18 October 2026).
  • The only dated timetable published is for the inaugural trip, not for a commercial timetable. TourMaG gives 9:56 am from Paris-Gare-de-Lyon, hall 2. Déplacements Pros mentions 9:15 am, which we could not verify (TourMaG, 15 October 2026; checked on 18 October 2026).
  • The bans on bikes and vehicles in December rest on a single outlet. Journal du Geek announces a ban on oversized bikes, fatbikes and gyropods from 13 December 2026, citing an SNCF message we could not open (Journal du Geek, 13 October 2026; checked on 18 October 2026).
  • The debate on accessibility for passengers with reduced mobility is not settled. The specialist blog Cross Border Rail judges access “not ideal but legal” on platforms 550 mm high in France, against 760 mm elsewhere in Europe. It is not a regulator’s position, and no official SNCF data has been found (Cross Border Rail, original article of 11 March 2025, rewritten March 2025; checked on 18 October 2026).

Frequently asked questions about the TGV M Paris-Marseille

When does the TGV M run between Paris and Marseille?

The inaugural trip is announced for Friday 6 November 2026, leaving from Paris-Gare-de-Lyon and heading to Marseille-Saint-Charles, according to the AFP dispatch of 14 October 2026, which relays the SNCF press invitation. Opening to ordinary passengers is not confirmed: only one source mentions 9 November. To buy a ticket, wait for SNCF to publish its timetables.

Does the TGV M cost more than a classic TGV INOUI?

No fare specific to the TGV M has been announced. Prices follow TGV INOUI’s dynamic pricing, so buying early is still the best way to pay less. The average rise of about 1% on 2 January 2026 applies to all TGV INOUI and OUIGO trains, not to the TGV M in particular. Compare prices once the fare grid is published.

How many seats does a TGV M have?

A trainset can carry up to 740 seats in its maximum configuration, about 17% more (740 vs 634 seats according to Ulysse) than the TGV Duplex. For a double trainset the figures differ: 1,240 seats according to TourMaG, more than 1,400 passengers according to AFP. No final seating plan has been published yet.

Does the TGV M stop at Lyon or Aix-en-Provence?

No intermediate stop is announced for the TGV M in the sources we checked. Don’t plan for one until SNCF publishes it. Avignon and Aix-en-Provence TGV are also served by OUIGO, TGV INOUI and Trenitalia.

Can I take my bike on the TGV M?

TGV INOUI rules apply by default: a bike that doesn’t fold must be reserved, for €10 per journey according to Journal du Geek, and a bike folded in a 90 × 130 cm cover travels free. The same article announces bans on certain vehicles from 13 December 2026, a measure no other source has confirmed so far.

Is the TGV M accessible to wheelchair users?

No official data on TGV M accessibility has been published, and the platform-height debate is not settled. Don’t assume wheelchair access is guaranteed: book assistance in advance with SNCF and keep a backup plan.

What time does the first TGV M leave?

According to TourMaG, the only source on this point, the inaugural trip would leave Paris-Gare-de-Lyon at 9:56 am from hall 2. This is not a commercial timetable: no departures grid has been published. Déplacements Pros mentions 9:15 am, which we have not been able to verify.

Is the TGV M faster than a TGV INOUI?

No time saving has been announced for the TGV M. Journey times shown on 18 October 2026 put a classic TGV INOUI at about 3h 03 on Paris-Marseille on SNCF Connect. No journey time specific to the TGV M has been published so far.
