For 2026-2027, the first lifts are announced from 2 October 2026 on the Hintertux glacier, and lifts at the main areas open between 19 November (Obergurgl) and 4 December 2026. Kitzbühel announces 6 November, subject to snowmaking, but the tourist office gives 21 November.
Checked on against Austria Tourism, Ski Austria and Alpy (English versions), and the announcements cited.
Austria’s ski season opens in waves, not all at once. Glaciers announce their season from October, lifts at most of the large areas we track open between 19 November and 4 December, and the full areas arrive later, sometimes in mid-December. Dates vary by sector, by whether the opening is partial or complete, and by snow cover. This article reviews the dates published as of 25 October 2026, flags those that remain provisional, and shows where sources disagree without settling the question for you. For other ski areas, see our ski resort opening guide 2026-2027.
1. The 2026-2027 calendar at a glance
The table gathers lift opening dates by area. The « Date status » column shows whether the date is confirmed by an official source, provisional, announced subject to conditions, or in discrepancy. An area missing from this table has not been checked.
Method. We checked the Austria Tourism pages (English version), Ski Austria and Alpy (English version, updated 29 September 2026), as well as the federal transport ministry page on winter tyres. Bergfex.fr and skiinfo.fr were spotted but not read in full, and see.at was not opened. The official websites of Kitzbühel and Ischgl returned errors when checked, and the Austria Tourism PDF was not readable.

Three kinds of opening appear in this table. A partial opening covers only a few runs and lifts, sometimes only on certain days of the week. A full opening covers the whole area, often several weeks after the first date. Opening events, concerts, festivals or races, mark a party date that does not, on its own, mean the whole area is open for skiing. Confusing them leads to planning a ski week on an area that is not yet complete.
2. Glaciers open first, from October
Glaciers announce their season before the big resorts. Austria Tourism gives the Hintertux, in the Zillertal, for 2 October 2026, and the Stubai glacier, at Neustift, for 9 October, on a provisional basis. The Kitzsteinhorn, above Kaprun, is announced for 10 October, subject to good snow conditions. At Sölden, the men’s and women’s World Cup is announced on the Rettenbach for 24 and 25 October 2026: it is the only fixed date in this sector, the start of the main sector, announced around 12 November, not being confirmed. We found no report of an actual opening as of the publication date.

Hintertux and Stubai: the mountain before the villages
The Hintertux is a glacier that runs almost all year. The 2 October 2026 date is the season start announced by the tourist office: it does not mean the whole area is skiable from that day. Austria Tourism gives this date for the 2026-2027 season.
Key points
- Hintertux: 2 October 2026, announced season date
- Stubai, Neustift: 9 October 2026, provisional date
- Sölden: World Cup on 24 and 25 October, main sector not confirmed
3. Kitzbühel: 6 November announced, 21 November official
Kitzbühel is the resort that raises the most questions this year. It announces the opening of a first sector from 6 November 2026, ahead of most of the large Austrian areas. But the tourist office only retains 21 November as the first officially open weekend. Both dates are presented here without choosing one for you.

Resterkogel and Kirchberg: the sector that opens first
The 6 November announcement is credited to the resort. It was relayed in September by Snow-forecast (Whiteroom, 16 September 2026) and by unofficialnetworks.com (17 September 2026), then picked up by Alpy, which describes the opening in weekends and crews. But 6 November 2026 is a Friday: the exact form of the opening still needs confirming on the resort’s website. Austria Tourism, for its part, gives 21 November as the first official weekend, with a Hahnenkamm preview on 21 and 22 November. Alpy places the full area around 11 December. The official Kitzbühel pages could not be reached when checked on 25 October 2026, so we could not confirm the date on the resort’s site.
The opening relies on snowmaking: the resort produces snow on the Resterkogel to keep its date. An opening of this kind does not guarantee the conditions on the day.
Key points
- Resterkogel and Kirchberg: opening announced for 6 November, subject to conditions
- First official weekend according to Austria Tourism: 21 November
- Full area targeted around 11 December (Alpy estimate)
The following table separates the three dates in circulation, so you can see where each one comes from.
| Date | What is announced | Source | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 November 2026 (Friday) | Opening of the Resterkogel and Kirchberg sector; Alpy describes weekends and crews | Announcement credited to the resort, relayed by Snow-forecast (16 September) and unofficialnetworks.com (17 September), picked up by Alpy | Announced, subject to snowmaking; exact form to be confirmed |
| 21 November 2026 (Saturday) | First officially open weekend | Austria Tourism, winter openings page | Official tourist office date, diverging |
| 21 and 22 November 2026 | Hahnenkamm preview | Alpy, Austria Tourism | Announced |
| Around 11 December 2026 | Full area targeted | Alpy | Estimate, not confirmed |
Source: Alpy, Austria Tourism, checked on 25 October 2026. The resort’s official pages were not readable on that date.
For the race itself, the Streif and the atmosphere of the Hahnenkamm weekend, see our guide to the Hahnenkamm 2027 in Kitzbühel, which covers the spectator experience and the stay.
4. Ischgl: opening on 26 November, concert to be settled
Ischgl opens its Silvretta Arena on 26 November 2026, the date most widely reported. The opening concert, however, has no single date in the sources we read. It is the first point to check if the event matters to your choice.

Silvretta Arena, in the Paznaun valley
The 26 November 2026 opening is confirmed by Austria Tourism and Alpy. The concert « Top of the Mountain » is placed on 28 November by Austria Tourism, while Ski Austria puts it on the day of the opening. No source we read settles it. The official Ischgl website returned an error when checked on 25 October 2026: it is the resort that must settle this before you book.
A new eight-seat detachable chairlift, the Höllkarbahn C2, is announced for winter 2026-2027 by specialist sites, whose pages we did not open in full. No commissioning date appears in what we read: do not link it to the general opening on 26 November.
The Silvretta Arena area is linked to Samnaun, in Switzerland. If you plan to ski there, check that your lift pass covers that sector before you buy.
Key points
- First day of skiing: 26 November 2026, confirmed
- Concert « Top of the Mountain »: 26 or 28 November, to be settled
- Höllkarbahn C2: commissioning date not set
5. Saalbach Hinterglemm: 27 November in part, BERGFESTival to be confirmed
Saalbach Hinterglemm opens part of its lifts on 27 November 2026. The area is part of the Skicircus, which links Saalbach Hinterglemm, Leogang and Fieberbrunn. December combines skiing and entertainment here, with dates that do not all sit at the same level of certainty.

Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn
The partial opening on 27 November is confirmed by Austria Tourism and Alpy. The BERGFESTival is announced for 3 to 6 December by Ski Austria and Austria Tourism. Another source cites 5 and 6 December only. We keep the first range, flagged as to be reconfirmed. Rave on Snow, the other December event, is announced for 10 to 13 December 2026.
A new multi-station lift, the Reiterkogelbahn, is planned for November 2026 according to secondary sources. No official announcement has been read, so we do not present it as settled.
Key points
- 27 November 2026: partial opening, confirmed
- 3 to 6 December 2026: BERGFESTival, to be reconfirmed
- 10 to 13 December 2026: Rave on Snow, announced
6. The other areas, in context
Beyond the three resorts at the heart of this guide, the calendar stretches to mid-December. Five reference points are enough to plan a stay.
- Obergurgl-Hochgurgl (Ötztal, Tyrol): opening on 19 November 2026, confirmed by Austria Tourism and Ski Austria. Alpy gives around 18 November, a date no official source confirms.
- Obertauern (Salzburg): partial opening on 20 November, full on 27 November 2026 according to Alpy. The opening week mentioned by Austria Tourism is covered in the section on source discrepancies, further down.
- Arlberg (St. Anton and Lech Zürs): lifts open on 2 December 2026 at Lech Zürs and St. Anton, according to Alpy and Austria Tourism. St. Anton’s opening weekend does not fall on the same day: see « What other guides don’t tell you ».
- Zell am See-Kaprun, Zillertal and Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis (Tyrol and Salzburg): Zell am See-Kaprun and Mayrhofen open on 4 December 2026, Hochzillertal-Kaltenbach on 5 December according to Austria Tourism. Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis starts partially on 4 December and fully on 19 December.
- Ski amadé (Salzburg and Styria): Flachau opens on 27 November, Schladming-Dachstein on 28 November for some sectors and on 4 December for the others, according to Alpy. Ski amadé pass: prices not verified.
7. Tolls, equipment and access
Two rules affect almost every driver who skis in Austria. The first is the vignette, which covers motorways and expressways. The second concerns winter tyres. The table summarises both, with the source of each item.
| Requirement | Date it applies | Amount or rule | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Winter tyres | From 1 November 2026 | Mandatory equipment in winter conditions | Federal Ministry of Transport (bmimi.gv.at), theinternational.at |
| Fine for winter tyres | If the rule is not followed | €35 | bmimi.gv.at; the €60 or €100 amounts cited elsewhere are not retained |
| Vignette 2027 | Sales from December 2026 | €106.80 according to ASFINAG, to be reconfirmed | ASFINAG, relayed by vol.at |
Source: bmimi.gv.at (federal ministry of transport), ASFINAG for the vignette, price relayed by vol.at and to be reconfirmed, checked on 25 October 2026.
The 2027 rate used for the vignette is €106.80 according to ASFINAG, relayed by vol.at. We could not read it directly on asfinag.at when checking: confirm it before you buy. Our dedicated article on the 2027 vignette explains how to buy the e-vignette and what it costs.
For tyres, 6 November, the opening day announced at Kitzbühel, falls within the requirement period. A driver who arrives that day must therefore be equipped, as long as winter conditions are present.
Getting there. The reference airports are Salzburg for Kitzbühel and Saalbach, Innsbruck for Ischgl, the Ötztal and the Zillertal, and Munich for Kitzbühel, Saalbach and Ischgl, which you then reach by car. We did not check journey times or transfer prices: look them up before you book.
Lift passes. Prices for the 2026-2027 lift passes were not checked on the areas’ websites: look them up before you buy. For the Ski amadé pass, prices are not verified.
What other guides don’t tell you
Four points are missing from the general guides we consulted, or appear there without a dated source. Each one points to the source opened, checked on 25 October 2026.
- Hintertux: a season date separate from year-round operation. The glacier runs almost all year, but Austria Tourism gives 2 October 2026 as the start of the ski season (austria.info, checked 25 October 2026). Autriche.com only describes the annual opening, in an article about the 2025-2026 season that gives no date for 2026-2027: we did not retain it for dates.
- St. Anton: lifts and opening weekend do not fall on the same day. Lifts open on 2 December 2026 (Alpy, Austria Tourism). The opening weekend and the Stanton Ski Open run from 4 to 6 December (Ski Austria). An older secondary source (skiinfo.fr, not opened in full) cites 9 December: we discard it (checked 25 October 2026).
- Obertauern: full opening and the animation week are not the same thing. Alpy gives partial opening on 20 November and full opening on 27 November 2026. Austria Tourism mentions an opening week from 27 November to 8 December: both readings are compatible if you separate the lifts from the events (alpy.com and austria.info, checked 25 October 2026).
- The Austria Tourism page shows no update date. The winter openings page, in English, carries no revision date, unlike Alpy (29 September 2026) and Ski Austria (11 October 2026). To judge how fresh a date is, compare it with those two dated sources, and check each area’s page before you go (checked 25 October 2026).
Frequently asked questions about the ski season in Austria
When do ski areas open in Austria in 2026-2027?
The glaciers open first: the Hintertux announced 2 October 2026 according to Austria Tourism, and the Stubai glacier 9 October, provisionally. Lifts at most of the large areas we follow open between 19 November (Obergurgl) and 4 December 2026 (Zell am See-Kaprun, Mayrhofen). Full areas come later: Obertauern on 27 November, Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis on 19 December, Kitzbühel targeted around 11 December, an estimate.
Does Kitzbühel open on 6 November 2026?
The Resterkogel and Kirchberg sectors are announced for 6 November 2026, subject to snowmaking. This announcement, credited to the resort, was relayed in September by Snow-forecast and unofficialnetworks.com. However, the Austrian tourist office gives 21 November as the first officially open weekend, and the full area is targeted around 11 December. Check the day before, as the date may slip.
What is the opening date for Ischgl?
The first day of skiing is set for 26 November 2026, according to Austria Tourism and Alpy. The opening concert « Top of the Mountain » is announced for 28 November by Austria Tourism, while Ski Austria places it on the very day of the opening. This discrepancy must be settled on Ischgl’s official website, which was not accessible when checked on 25 October 2026.
Does Saalbach open before 6 December?
Yes, in part. Lifts at the Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn open on 27 November 2026 according to Austria Tourism and Alpy. The BERGFESTival is announced for 3 to 6 December by Ski Austria and Austria Tourism, while another source cites only 5 and 6 December: to be reconfirmed. Rave on Snow is announced for 10 to 13 December.
Do you need winter tyres to drive in Austria in November?
Yes. Winter tyres are mandatory from 1 November, in winter conditions, according to the federal ministry of transport (bmimi.gv.at). The fine for non-compliance is €35 according to that source. On 6 November, the opening day announced at Kitzbühel, the requirement applies whenever winter conditions are present.
Do you need a vignette for Austrian motorways in winter?
Yes, the vignette is mandatory on motorways and expressways. The 2027 version is announced at €106.80 according to ASFINAG, relayed by vol.at, with the price to be reconfirmed on asfinag.at. Sales start from December 2026. Our dedicated article on the 2027 vignette covers buying the e-vignette.
Are the opening dates guaranteed?
No. Resorts rely on snowmaking to keep their dates, and an announced opening is not a guaranteed one, as Alpy (updated 29 September 2026) and Ski Austria point out. Published dates are targets. Distinguish partial opening, a few runs sometimes only on certain days, from the full opening of the area.
Can you ski at Sölden in October 2026?
The men’s and women’s World Cup was announced on the Rettenbach for 24 and 25 October 2026, according to Ski Austria and Alpy; we did not read a report of it. The main sector, announced around 12 November by Austria Tourism, is not confirmed by a second source. Skiing on the glacier in October depends on the snow on the day.
