New England’s autumn colour moves from north to south, and 17 October 2026 falls at the tail end of the best window for Keene, New Hampshire. According to Jeff Foliage, southern New Hampshire and Vermont are at their best from 10 to 17 October. The Keene Pumpkin Festival takes place on Saturday 17 October at 2pm, free entry, at Railroad Square. No official peak date exists for Keene itself, so aim for the weekend of 16 to 18 October and stick to the valleys.

A weekend in Keene, New Hampshire (not Keene, Ontario, which also holds a pumpkin festival on 17 October). After a short, dull autumn in 2025, the 2026 season looks more generous, but it is starting slowly. Here is where the leaves stand, how to build a trip around the festival on Saturday 17 October, and what the festival has really become: a small-town party, a long way from the pumpkin records of old. If you are flying from London, Boston is your gateway, and the whole trip works as a long weekend.

1. Foliage 2026: a slow start, a season that could run long

Peak colour moves south as the month goes on

North and high ground: late September to early October Southern NH/VT: 10 to 17 October Southern New England: 15 to 30 October Season: 4 to 6 weeks

According to Jim Salge, Yankee Magazine’s foliage forecaster, the forests have recovered from the 2025 drought: good snowpack last winter, rain through spring and summer, few pests and diseases. His forecast is a slow start that could turn into a long, spectacular season. His field advice is to follow the colour as it works its way south rather than aiming at a single weekend.

The timetable, from Jeff Foliage’s forecast: northern Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine peak from late September to early October, the southern half of those three states gets its « prime viewing » from 10 to 17 October, and southern New England (Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island) lights up later, from 15 to 30 October. These ranges come from models, not observations: only Maine (Wednesday reports) and Vermont’s foresters publish on-the-ground readings.

What to know for 17 October

  • Keene sits in a valley in south-west New Hampshire, at around 500 ft (150 m): expect advanced colour, with a good window in the valleys.
  • Higher up, some trees may already have dropped their leaves by then.
  • Beech leaf disease is robbing the coast and the south of the late golden yellow that used to rescue the stragglers.
Pixidia tip: no source gives a peak date for Keene itself. Monday 12 October is a US public holiday (Columbus Day, the nearest thing to an American bank holiday weekend), which makes for a very busy three-day weekend in the White Mountains: for the north of the state, go the following week instead.

2. Keene Pumpkin Festival 2026: Saturday 17 October at 2pm

A free, family-friendly town party

Saturday 17 October 2026 From 2pm (local time) Free entry Town centre, hub at Railroad Square

According to the official site of organiser Let It Shine, the 2026 edition takes place on Saturday 17 October at 2pm, and Explore Keene confirms that Main Street closes to traffic during the event. The city council approved this year’s licence, according to the Keene Sentinel.

What the local paper describes for 2026: a costume parade, free pumpkin carving at Railroad Square, a schools’ display along Main Street, three performance stages, vendors, trick-or-treating, children’s activities, a « haunted alley » run by the UCC church and a tower of pumpkins due to be lit at around 5.30pm, at sunset. The detailed programme and parking plan had not been published as of 5 October: check the official site and the event’s Facebook page before you set off.

What the festival has become

  • 1991: first edition, around 600 pumpkins. In 2013, 30,581 lit pumpkins were claimed as a record, according to Wikipedia.
  • 2014: student parties unconnected to the festival turned into riots, with more than 100 arrests according to WBUR. In 2015 the city council voted 13 to 1 against the licence, and the big version moved to Laconia.
  • 2017: a scaled-down, family-focused version returned. There is no record attempt any more: no pumpkin count has been announced for 2026.
Pixidia tip: a $28 million infrastructure project is taking over Central Square from mid-July to November 2026, according to the City of Keene. The centre stays open, but expect some disruption around the square, with the event spreading towards Railroad Square to compensate.

3. A weekend around Keene, 16 to 18 October

Monadnock, covered bridges and Route 9

92 miles from Boston Logan (about 2 hours) 3 days, 2 nights Monadnock: $15 per vehicle Layers, a hat, ankle-high boots

Friday 16 October. Arrive in Keene from Boston Logan, then stroll round town and along the Cheshire Rail Trail, from where you can see Monadnock.

Saturday 17 October. In the morning, climb Mount Monadnock (965 m, about 3,170 ft; 3 to 5 hours return, with the White Dot trail shorter and steeper and the Pumpelly trail longer and more gradual). According to New Hampshire State Parks, parking costs $15 per vehicle plus a $1 reservation fee, recommended at weekends, and pets are not allowed. There is no non-resident surcharge here: it is a state park, not a national park. At 2pm, head to the festival.

Sunday 18 October. The covered bridges of Swanzey, next door to Keene (the town has 4 of the area’s 7, according to VisitNH), or Route 9 towards Brattleboro (the Molly Stark Scenic Byway), which cuts through the Green Mountain National Forest. The best period there is more like mid to late October.

How to beat the crowds

  • Set off early, keep the tank full and carry a paper map: mobile signal drops in the mountains.
  • Book the night of 17 October straight away: Keene has few hotels and the festival is that evening (town-centre options include the Courtyard by Marriott or the Best Western Plus).
  • Respect local residents: access roads to some much-photographed spots in Vermont have already been closed because of overcrowding.
Pixidia tip: further north, the Kancamagus Highway (34 miles, or 55 km, between Lincoln and Conway) has no petrol station and no restaurant. Allow 2 to 3 hours with stops, and pick a weekday.

4. Travelling on another date? Where to go

Choose your region by date

  • Before 12 October: White Mountains, northern Vermont, western Maine. Maine publishes weekly reports on Wednesdays, with a hotline on 1-888-624-6345.
  • Weekend of 17 October: Keene, Monadnock, the Berkshires (Massachusetts), where higher ground peaks from 7 to 14 October and lower ground from 14 to 21 October according to the models.
  • After 20 October: Connecticut, Rhode Island, the coast, then the Laconia Pumpkin Festival (23 and 24 October), in another New Hampshire town, not to be confused with Keene. For Halloween, see our 2026 Halloween guide to Salem.

If the idea of combining the United States with Canada appeals, our article on Indian summer in Quebec and Ontario follows the same colour calendar, and our pick of the best destinations for October and November helps you compare.

Pixidia tip: according to the University of Vermont, quoted by WCAX, peak colour now arrives about a week later than it did 30 years ago. The « usual dates » in older guidebooks need shifting accordingly.

5. Flying from the UK: flights, car hire and entry rules

Rough budget and paperwork

London Heathrow to Boston: about 8 hours ESTA: about $40 Car hire: from €34 a day off-peak ESTA valid for 2 years

British Airways and Virgin Atlantic both fly direct from London Heathrow to Boston Logan, in roughly 8 hours westbound according to Flightsfrom (the return is about 7 hours 25 minutes). We have no reliable fare to quote for foliage weekends, so check dates on a few comparison sites: the leaf-peeping season pushes prices up, and midweek departures are usually cheaper. Land at Boston Logan: Manchester-Boston airport, 56 miles from Keene, has no direct transatlantic service.

Entry rules and costs to know about

  • British passport holders need an ESTA (or a visa) to enter the US, for tourist stays of up to 90 days. The fee has been around $40 since the end of September 2025, and an approved ESTA lasts 2 years. Apply only on the official CBP ESTA site, and beware of third-party sites that add a mark-up.
  • Your passport must be valid for the length of your stay. The FCDO entry requirements also warn that officials may ask to inspect your devices, emails, messages and social media activity: check the page again before you fly.
  • A full UK driving licence is generally accepted for visitors for up to three months, although some car hire firms ask for an International Driving Permit. Remember to drive on the right. Minimum rental age is 21, with a young-driver surcharge under 25 at most companies.
  • If you push on to Acadia (Maine): $100 per adult aged 16 and over on top of the $35 per vehicle, or $250 for the non-resident annual pass, according to the National Park Service.
  • Time difference with London: 5 hours behind on 17 October, then 4 hours between 25 October and 1 November, while the UK has gone back to GMT and the US has not.
Pixidia tip: rooms in foliage regions often cost two to three times their usual rate, and a midweek stay is cheaper than a weekend. Save the pricier nights for the famous areas (Stowe, the White Mountains) and sleep in Keene or a nearby town for the rest.
