Yellowstone’s snowcoaches run from 15 December 2026 to 7 or 15 March 2027, depending on the entrance (indicative date for the North Entrance). At Xanterra, the snowcoach from Mammoth to Old Faithful costs $179.45 per adult, taxes included, with a mandatory night in Mammoth. The Mammoth to Cooke City road normally stays open to cars, weather permitting.

Checked on against the official sources cited (NPS, recreation.gov, Xanterra).

Yellowstone in winter is nothing like the summer park. According to regional press, the inner roads will no longer be open to ordinary cars from 1 November 2026. The heart of the park only comes back to life on 15 December, with snowcoaches and guided snowmobiles. This guide gathers the 2026-2027 season dates checked on 24 October 2026, the official rates, the three ways into the park and the tips that really matter on the ground.

1. Can you visit Yellowstone in winter?

Yellowstone in winter: what stays open

Bozeman shuttle: $110.81 From 15 December 2026 to mid-March 2027 About -12 °C at night in January Wildlife easier to spot in December

You don’t visit the park in winter the way you do in summer. The inner roads, the ones leading to Hayden Valley or Old Faithful, are reserved for oversnow vehicles. What stays open to cars is the road linking Mammoth Hot Springs to the Northeast Entrance, near Cooke City, through the Lamar Valley. That’s also where the animals gather. According to Destination Yellowstone, bison, elk and wolves are easiest to see in the morning and late afternoon.

Mammoth Hot Springs, the Albright Visitor Center and the Mammoth General Store stay open all year, according to the Xanterra page on opening dates, updated 22 October 2026. The rooms at the Old Faithful Snow Lodge, however, only open on 16 December 2026. The winter visitor centers at Canyon, Old Faithful and the NPS Desk in West Yellowstone open on 15 December, with an end date still to be confirmed.

Highlights

  • The road from Mammoth to the Northeast Entrance, at Cooke City, is in principle open to cars all year, weather permitting (NPS).
  • The winter visitor centers and the Geyser Grill at the Snow Lodge open on 15 December 2026; the Snow Lodge rooms open on 16 December.
  • Lamar Valley is the main winter wildlife viewing area, with wolves, bison and elk.
Pixidia tip: if you don’t want to depend on snow or road conditions, book your shuttle or snowcoach first, then set your nights around those slots.

To watch wildlife without driving on snowy roads, a private winter safari leaves from Gardiner, at the North Entrance. According to the Viator listing checked on 24 October 2026, it lasts 6 to 8 hours. Check the vehicle and the itinerary on the listing before you book.

When to get in, when to get out

Opens: 15 December 2026 Ends: 7 or 15 March 2027 Roads closed to cars: early November Sylvan Pass: to be confirmed

The 15 December 2026 opening date appears on the North Entrance permit page on recreation.gov and on the pages of licensed operators. The end dates, however, vary by entrance. The table below sums them up.

Highlights

  • The North Entrance season ends earlier, on 7 March 2027 according to the indicative date.
  • Sylvan Pass can be closed for several hours, or even several days, when avalanche risk is high.
  • Xanterra lodging closes on dates that don’t always match those of the shuttles.

Which month to pick

December marks the start of the season: fewer vehicles on the oversnow routes, animals concentrated at lower elevations and short daylight. According to the sources consulted, January has the deepest snow and the fewest visitors, with the lowest minimums (-12.4 °C on average, according to the NPS). March is the end of the season: the North Entrance closes on 7 March 2027 (indicative date), which narrows your options for the final weeks.

Pixidia tip: for the East Entrance and Sylvan Pass, the 2026-2027 dates are not confirmed. Check them on the park website before building an itinerary that depends on them.

3. Snowcoach, guided snowmobile or independent snowmobile: which to choose

The three ways into the park

Snowcoach: heated vehicle Guided snowmobile Independent snowmobile: lottery Groups and families

The NPS only allows oversnow access by licensed commercial guided snowcoaches or snowmobiles, under a 2013 rule (36 CFR 7.13) that governs licensed operators. Snowcoaches and guided snowmobiles are offered by operators listed on the NPS guided tours page. Unguided snowmobiling goes through a lottery. No new rule for 2026-2027 has been published in the sources consulted.

The main drawback of the snowcoach is booking: the Xanterra shuttle requires a Xanterra stay or tour, and the Mammoth to Old Faithful snowcoach requires a night in Mammoth. The guided snowmobile leaves you outdoors, in the wind and the cold, but you book it with an operator licensed by the NPS, whose list is on the guided tours page. Operators in West Yellowstone, Yellowstone Vacations first among them, run trips from the Yellowstone Park Hotel, with published dates (Old Faithful Explorer, every day at 8 am from 15 December 2026 to 15 March 2027; Canyon Explorer, from 15 December 2026 to 9 March 2027), but no price is shown: booking goes through FareHarbor or by phone.

Highlights

  • The snowcoach offers the best comfort for a first winter at Yellowstone.
  • The guided snowmobile suits travellers who want to ride without handling the logistics.
  • The independent snowmobile requires luck in the lottery and a valid licence.
Pixidia tip: ask each operator for the full price, taxes and number of seats before comparing. Published rates are not all dated or comparable.

4. 2026-2027 rates: shuttles, snowcoaches and snowshoes

What the Xanterra transfers cost

Snowcoach: $179.45 per adult Child aged 3 to 11: half price Bozeman shuttle: $110.81 -10% with a Winter Package

Xanterra, the park’s concessionaire, publishes the most solid rates of the season: the shuttle between Bozeman airport and Mammoth Hot Springs, and the snowcoach between Mammoth and Old Faithful. These prices include taxes and fees, and children under 3 travel free. The park entrance fee is not included.

Three rules apply to these prices. A night in Mammoth is required before the snowcoach to Old Faithful, and you cannot take the Bozeman shuttle and the snowcoach on the same day. Luggage is limited to two pieces, plus one small carry-on bag, skis or snowshoes, and each extra bag or any bag over 50 pounds costs $25. Animals are not allowed on board, except assistance dogs.

For walking tours, Xanterra offers two snowshoe tours from Old Faithful, shown in the next table. The Old Faithful Area Snowshoe Tour is the most affordable, but you need to add the snowcoach transfer from Mammoth.

Source: Xanterra, « Old Faithful Area Snowshoe Tour » and « Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone Snowshoe Tour » pages, checked on 24 October 2026. Times can change depending on the weather.

Highlights

  • One night in Mammoth is enough to catch the 7:45 am snowcoach the next day; the Bozeman shuttle reaches Mammoth around 4 pm.
  • The Couples Winter Adventure Package bundles nights, snowcoach, meals and tours, with no price published in the sources consulted.
Pixidia tip: Xanterra’s rates are not those of an independent operator. For a snowcoach from West Yellowstone, no price is publicly displayed: ask for a written quote, with the taxes and tips spelled out.

5. A typical day at Old Faithful

The most common trip starts in Mammoth. The Xanterra snowcoach leaves at 7:45 am and reaches Old Faithful around noon, about four hours and a quarter on the road. A second departure at 1:45 pm arrives around 6 pm. For a snowshoe tour, the 8:15 am slot assumes you have already slept on site, since a snowcoach taken the same morning leaves no time to get ready. The 1 pm tour, for its part, only leaves an hour between the snowcoach arriving around noon and the departure.

The rest of the day is on foot around the Old Faithful Snow Lodge, stopping at the viewpoints. The snowcoaches stop for wildlife, and you then have to step out into the cold: warm boots and several layers are essential. The return depends on the day’s timetable, which depends on the weather and road conditions.

For a family trip, the 8:15 am snowshoe tour, which ends around 11:30 am according to the published programme, leaves the afternoon free, provided you sleep on site the night before. For a couple, the 7:45 am departure from Mammoth gets you to Old Faithful before noon. On a tight budget, compare the costs: the Mammoth to Old Faithful snowcoach costs $179.45 per adult, while an independent snowmobile costs $40 per day and per permit, plus $6 in fees, but depends on the lottery.

6. Independent snowmobiling: the NCGSAP lottery

Driving a snowmobile yourself, with a lottery permit

$40 per day + $6 fee Applications in August Traffic from 7 am to 9 pm Driver aged 16 minimum

Unguided snowmobiling is the only option that lets you ride alone in the park. Access goes through the NCGSAP lottery, described in the NPS logistics guide, updated 20 October 2026. Applications ran from 1 to 31 August 2026 on recreation.gov. The 2026 results are not in the sources consulted, so we can’t announce a selection figure.

Unclaimed permits have been sold on recreation.gov on a first come, first served basis since 1 October 2026, with no waiting list. A permit allows up to three days, with five snowmobiles maximum per group and only one group per entrance per day. The driver must hold a valid licence and complete the free online course, valid for two years. A refund of the $40 per day is possible 14 days or more before the date. There is no refund for bad weather.

Highlights

  • The cost is low for those who drive themselves: $40 per day, shared between the vehicles.
  • The online course is free and valid for two years.
Pixidia tip: don’t build a trip around an independent snowmobile without a plan B. Without a lottery permit, the same stay works by snowcoach or guided snowmobile.

7. Entry, permits and surcharge: what to pay on top

The entrance fee is added on top of the shuttle or snowcoach. The NPS sets a rate per vehicle or per person, valid for seven days. The table sums up the amounts on the park’s Fees page, updated 16 June 2026.

Park entrance fees and permits at Yellowstone, 2026-2027 season

Source: NPS, Fees page, updated 16 June 2026, checked on 24 October 2026.

The non-resident surcharge is the item guides most often leave out. The NPS page does mention this amount, but the effective date is not shown: check it before you leave and build it into your budget as a precaution. The America the Beautiful pass covers entry, but the page shows several amounts: confirm which one applies to you on the NPS website before you buy.

8. Cold, snow and gear

Cold at Yellowstone in winter

Record: -54 °C (1933) Over 1,829 m of elevation Nights down to -34 °C Sun reflected off the snow

NPS monthly averages describe a harsh winter: around -1 °C by day and -11 °C by night in December, then average minimums of -12 °C in January. The absolute record, -54 °C, was recorded on 9 February 1933 at the Riverside station, near the West Entrance. The NPS also reports nights that can drop to -34 °C. These are averages: one morning can be much colder, especially on wind-exposed plateaus.

Average winter temperatures at Yellowstone, NPS reference readings
MonthAverage highAverage low
December-0.8 °C (30.5 °F)-11.2 °C (11.8 °F)
January-1.9 °C (28.6 °F)-12.4 °C (9.6 °F)
February1.1 °C (34.0 °F)-10.6 °C (13.0 °F)

Source: NPS, Weather page, updated 30 September 2025, checked on 24 October 2026. Reference averages, not forecasts.

We don’t quote an annual snowfall total: the official figures we checked don’t match from one part of the NPS page to another. The key point is that the 2025-2026 winter was mild in places, with irregular snow and the West Entrance temporarily closed to snowmobiles in February 2026, according to specialist press.

Gear

  • Wool or fleece layers, never cotton, with a hooded down jacket.
  • Waterproof, well-insulated boots: Xanterra specifies that hiking shoes are not enough.
  • Warm gloves, disposable hand warmers, ski goggles and high-factor sunscreen.
Pixidia tip: for a private car on the North road, snow tyres and a 4×4 or AWD are recommended. The winter road information line is 307-344-2117.

What other guides don’t tell you

Several practical points are missing from mainstream guides, or appear there in an outdated form. Here is what official sources and operators let us confirm.

  • A night in Mammoth is mandatory before the snowcoach to Old Faithful. You also can’t take the Bozeman shuttle and the snowcoach on the same day. According to Xanterra, snowcoach transportation (checked on 24 October 2026).
  • The park is not fully closed. The road from Mammoth to Cooke City stays open to ordinary cars all year, weather permitting. According to NPS road conditions (page updated 29 September 2026, checked on 24 October 2026).
  • The end of the season depends on the entrance. 7 March 2027 for the North Entrance (indicative date), 15 March 2027 for the South and West. According to recreation.gov, permit 250849 (checked on 24 October 2026).
  • Taxes and fees are included in Xanterra rates, and children pay half the rate from age 3 to 11. According to Xanterra, winter transportation (checked on 24 October 2026).
  • Independent snowmobiling has no waiting list. Unsold permits go to the first person to ask since 1 October 2026. According to the NPS NCGSAP logistics guide (page updated 20 October 2026, checked on 24 October 2026).

Frequently asked questions

Can you visit Yellowstone in winter?

Yes, but not by ordinary car across the whole park. The inner roads close to ordinary cars from early November, according to regional press, and traffic resumes in oversnow vehicles from 15 December 2026. The road from Mammoth to Cooke City stays open all year according to the NPS, weather permitting, so you can drive through the Lamar Valley. Check the NPS road conditions.

When does the snowcoach season start in 2026-2027?

On 15 December 2026 for the North, South and West entrances, according to recreation.gov. For Sylvan Pass, at the East Entrance, the 2026-2027 date is not confirmed: check the park website. The season ends on 7 March 2027 for the North Entrance (indicative date) and on 15 March 2027 for the South and West. Check the dates before you book accommodation.

How much does the snowcoach from Mammoth to Old Faithful cost?

Xanterra lists $179.45 per adult and $89.72 per child aged 3 to 11 for the 2026-2027 season, taxes included. The return from Old Faithful to Mammoth costs $182.90. A night in Mammoth is required before departure, and booking goes through a Xanterra stay or tour. Independent snowcoaches from West Yellowstone don’t publish their price. The sources consulted don’t state a minimum booking lead time: check availability for the tour you choose on the Xanterra website before you set your dates.

Do you need to book the shuttle from Bozeman airport?

Yes. The Xanterra shuttle between Bozeman airport and Mammoth Hot Springs costs $110.81 per adult, taxes included, and the trip takes about 2 hours 30 minutes. It is only available with a booked Xanterra stay or tour, and its timetable depends on the weather and road conditions. The park entrance fee is not included. Check your flight schedule before you book.

What temperatures should you expect in December and January?

NPS averages are about -1 °C by day and -11 °C by night in December, then -2 °C by day and -12 °C by night in January. The park’s record, -54 °C, was recorded on 9 February 1933 at the Riverside station. These are averages: one morning can be much colder, and the wind makes the cold feel worse. Pack wool layers, a down jacket and warm gloves.

Do you need a 4×4 for Yellowstone in winter?

Not for the North road: the road from Mammoth to Cooke City stays open all year according to the NPS, weather permitting. For the inner roads you won’t drive yourself: access is by snowcoach or guided snowmobile. If you take your own vehicle, Xanterra recommends a 4×4 or AWD, and snow tyres are advised. The winter road information line is 307-344-2117.

What is the difference between a snowcoach and a snowmobile?

A snowcoach is a heated vehicle, driven by a licensed driver, that carries several passengers and stops for wildlife viewing, which means getting out into the cold. A snowmobile leaves you exposed to the wind: you drive it yourself or follow a guide. The comparison table in this article details the three options, their published prices and their booking constraints.

Can you ride a snowmobile without a guide in Yellowstone?

Yes, with a lottery permit. The 2026-2027 NCGSAP lottery ran from 1 to 31 August 2026: it costs $40 per day, plus $6 in non-refundable fees, for three days maximum. The driver must be 16, hold a valid licence and complete the free online course, valid for two years. Unclaimed permits are sold first come, first served from 1 October 2026, with no waiting list.

Is there a surcharge for non-residents?

The NPS mentions a $100 surcharge per person aged 16 and over, except for annual pass or America the Beautiful holders. The page we consulted does not confirm the effective date. Check the park fees page before you leave, and build the amount into your budget as a precaution.
