Nørrebro is free to explore on your own, with no guide or ticket: only book the extras. Assistens, Jægersborggade and Superkilen cost nothing, and Time Out ranked the district number one in the world in 2021. None of the 11 outings selected here goes through Nørrebro: they cover the rest of Copenhagen, from €5 (tip-based) to €171 per adult, almost all guided in English. Start with the bike tour to get your bearings.

You may have read that Nørrebro is « the coolest neighbourhood in the world ». Time Out gave it that title in 2021, and yet standard Copenhagen guidebooks often give it a single « bohemian » box between Nyhavn and Tivoli. I wanted to find out what Viator offers for getting there. The honest answer: almost nothing. The six catalogue products dedicated to Nørrebro have between 1 and 23 reviews each, far below my threshold of 100 reviews, and none of the 43 listings that pass that threshold mentions Nørrebro.

So this article does not promise you a guided tour of Nørrebro that does not exist. It does two things. First, it gives you what you need to explore it on your own, on foot, for almost nothing: Assistens Cemetery, Jægersborggade, Superkilen park, Blågårdsgade. Second, it selects 11 experiences you can book in Copenhagen, all rated 4.7 or higher on at least 100 reviews, that carry on this « Copenhagen beyond the postcard » spirit: Christianshavn, Vesterbro, food tours, cycling, pastry, Malmö. For each one I tell you plainly where it actually goes, and in which language. If you are unsure where to start, take the 3-hour bike tour: it teaches you to get around like the locals, which makes exploring Nørrebro independently easier afterwards.

Why Nørrebro: the Pixidia angle

Copenhagen street with bicycles, typical of the residential districts north of the centre
Photo by Annie Spratt on Unsplash

Nørrebro is a district north of the centre, beyond the lakes. It was built after the middle of the 19th century, when the city spilled out of its fortifications, as a working-class quarter of small flats, according to Vanupied. Ever since, it has welcomed newcomers: Swedes at the end of the 19th century, then migrants from the Middle East in the 2000s, or « 130 years of migration » according to Migrantour Copenhagen. Cafébabel presents it as the most diverse district in Denmark, while noting that some residents regret the lack of mixing between generations and the influx of students.

Time Out’s 2021 ranking, based on a survey of 27,000 city dwellers and the views of local editors, placed it first in the world. It was 28th in 2020. Remember the date: this is a 2021 fact, not a current title. What you will see on the ground is more concrete. Superkilen park, 750 m long, gathers objects from nearly 60 countries, chosen with the residents. Assistens Cemetery, founded in 1760, holds the graves of Hans Christian Andersen and Søren Kierkegaard. Jægersborggade lines up about 40 independent shops over 350 m, including Coffee Collective, there since 2008. The idea: walk through a district where people live, rather than visit a set.

11 experiences to book in Copenhagen, to complement Nørrebro

None of these 11 listings is a tour of Nørrebro. They are the best outings in Copenhagen I could find, rated above 4.7 on at least 100 reviews. Prices are per adult based on 2 adults, checked on 6 October 2026 over the following 30 days, and may vary with the date and group size.

1. Walking tour of the centre, the politically incorrect version

Rating 4.92 (3193 reviews) 2 hours €30.17 to €38.40 per adult (based on 2 adults) Instant confirmation English-language tour

This is not a tour of Nørrebro: the route stays in the historic centre, starting from Gammel Strand. I put it first because 3,193 travellers rate it 4.92 and because, in two hours, it offers an offbeat counterpoint to Nyhavn and to Denmark today. The operator itself warns that its humour does not suit lovers of classical history.

  • Meet in front of Gammel Strand metro station, look for the orange umbrella
  • Anecdotes about H.C. Andersen and present-day Denmark
  • Guide included, humour guaranteed

2. 3-hour bike tour with a local guide

Rating 4.87 (1628 reviews) 3 hours €54.72 per adult (based on 2 adults) Instant confirmation Guide in English, German or Italian depending on the slot

The listing talks about the centre and the guide’s favourite spots, it does not mention Nørrebro: do not count on it to get there. It serves another purpose, learning to ride in a city where, according to the listing, more than half of residents cycle, before hiring your own bike to reach Nørrebro. 1,628 reviews, and places available on the 30 days I tested.

  • Bike provided, helmet and poncho on request
  • Starting shop with luggage storage and toilets
  • Meeting point between Rådhuspladsen and Jarmers Plads

3. 4-hour food tour, 8 tastings around Torvehallerne

Rating 4.81 (1187 reviews) 4 hours €130 per adult (based on 2 adults) Instant confirmation Tour in English

If you are coming for Nørrebro’s food, this tour does not replace it: it stays in the centre and lets you taste Danish classics (smørrebrød, pastry, organic hot dog, chocolate, craft beer or cider). I keep it because it works as a proper meal and comes from an independent operator, open since 2011. The Danish basics will then help you place the world cuisines of Nørrebrogade. Flag your allergies before departure.

  • 8 tastings that add up to a full meal
  • Departure at Torvehallerne, in front of the hall 2 entrance
  • Independent operator, 4 hours of touring

4. Christianshavn and Christiania, tip-based tour

Rating 4.84 (281 reviews) 1 h 30 min about €5 per adult at booking, then a tip of your choice Instant confirmation Tour in English Limited slots, check the dates

Alternative Copenhagen, city-centre edition: this 90-minute walk links Nyhavn to Christianshavn and ends outside Christiania, not in Nørrebro. Same irreverent tone as tour no. 1, again in English. Slots are limited, with 8 days open out of the 30 I tested: check the dates before building your day around it.

Craft beer tasting in a pub in the Vesterbro district of Copenhagen

5. Vesterbro, beers and pubs in a small group

Rating 4.83 (205 reviews) 3 hours €60 per adult (based on 2 adults) Instant confirmation Native English-speaking guide

Vesterbro is Nørrebro’s counterpart on the other side of the centre: a former red-light district turned trendy, and the most telling comparison for understanding how a working-class neighbourhood reinvents itself. Here, 10 people at most, one traditional Danish beer and two craft ones, guided in English. It is not Nørrebro, but it is the same lived-in neighbourhood spirit.

  • 1 traditional beer and 2 craft beers included
  • Group limited to 10 people
  • Departure at the back entrance of the central station, Reventlowsgade

6. 3-hour food tour by bike, in English

Rating 4.82 (333 reviews) 3 hours €95.86 per adult (based on 2 adults) Instant confirmation Tour in English

Two pleasures in one: riding like a local and tasting Danish food. The route stays in the central districts and the listing does not mention Nørrebro. I recommend it if you want to cover more ground than on a walking food tour, as long as you are comfortable cycling in traffic.

  • Bike provided
  • Danish food tastings during the ride

7. Danish pastry class, wienerbrød

Rating 4.98 (316 reviews) 3 h 30 min €98.74 per adult (based on 2 adults) Manual confirmation Class in English Limited slots, check the dates

A workshop rather than a tour, so no link with Nørrebro: knead, laminate and fold butter puff pastry with a pastry chef. It has the highest rating in the selection, 4.98 on 316 reviews. Slots are rare, 6 days open out of 30 tested, and confirmation is manual: book early and check the dates.

8. Electric boat on the canals, 70 min

Rating 4.72 (239 reviews) 1 h 10 min €36.43 per adult (based on 2 adults) Instant confirmation Guided tour in English

The shortest and most affordable option for seeing the city from the water, far from Nørrebro, departing near Ved Stranden. The boat takes 12 passengers at most, with heated seats and blankets in the cold season, a real plus in October. It has the lowest rating in the selection, 4.72 on 239 reviews, but availability is still very good.

  • Electric boat, 12 passengers maximum
  • Heated seats and blankets in the cold season
  • Ticket office at Ved Stranden 26, departure from quays 1 to 3

9. Malmö and Lund in 6 h 30

Rating 4.75 (713 reviews) 6 h 30 min €96 per adult (based on 2 adults) Instant confirmation Commentary language not stated, check the listing Limited slots, check the dates

Across the Øresund Bridge, Malmö shares with Nørrebro the story of an arrival city, with residents of more than 170 nationalities according to travel guides. The listing itself describes a medieval circuit between Malmö and Lund, not a tour of diversity. The train is cheaper and leaves every 20 minutes: here, you are paying for the guiding. Passport required, limited slots.

  • Air-conditioned vehicle, Wi-Fi on board and audio guide
  • Passport or ID required for Sweden
  • Departure opposite the Astoria hotel, near the central station

Rating 4.82 (2594 reviews) 9 hours €107.65 to €120 per adult (based on 2 adults) Instant, then manual confirmation Commentary language not stated, check the listing

A big day out to Kronborg, Helsingør, Lund and Malmö, unrelated to Nørrebro. I include it for its volume of reviews, 2,594 for a 4.82 rating, and for those who want two countries without organising a single ticket. The listing mentions fuel surcharges: check the total at checkout. Passport required.

11. Private 3-hour walk through Copenhagen

Rating 4.91 (3965 reviews) 3 hours €171.43 per adult (private group rate of €342.85 for 2 adults) Manual confirmation Guide in English or Spanish

The most expensive option, but also the most flexible: 3,965 reviews for 4.91, and a guide for you alone or your group. It starts from City Hall, not Nørrebro. I have not checked whether the district can be added to the route: write to the operator before booking if that is your goal.

  • Private professional guide, group rate
  • Meet on the steps of City Hall, guide with a green label

Practical tips for visiting Nørrebro on your own

Bridge and canal in Copenhagen with bicycles in the foreground

A half-day walking route. Start from the Dronning Louises Bro bridge, built in 1887, then enter Assistens Cemetery (free, open every day). Head down to Jægersborggade for a coffee or a porridge, walk to Blågårds Plads and Blågårdsgade, then reach Superkilen along Nørrebrogade. A full day leaves time for lunch: Nørrebrogade lines up Turkish kebabs, Lebanese shawarma, Somali cooking and Palestinian bakeries, at gentler prices than in the centre. Some small places and supper clubs prefer cash: bring a little change, and note that places such as Møller Kaffe & Køkken close at 2.30 pm.

Getting there. The M3 metro (Cityringen) serves Nørrebros Runddel, and lines M1 and M2 stop at Nørreport. If you hire a bike after the guided tour, Dronning Louises Bro is a major cycle route. The Copenhagen Card offers transport and more than 80 attractions, but it is of no use for a stay centred on Nørrebro, whose sights are free. For a human guide, also look at the 1 h 30 tour by Migrantour, led by guides with a migration background: check the language of the slot.

Respect and season. Assistens is a working cemetery: keep quiet, and no photos of ceremonies. Superkilen is the residents’ park: avoid flying a drone. For places of worship, find out the rules before going in. In October, expect around 7 to 13 °C and some rainy days: bring a waterproof and layers. For Sweden, take your passport or ID, and note that the train to Malmö leaves the central station about every 20 minutes, with a 35 to 40 minute journey. To combine Copenhagen with other cities, have a look at our getaways under 3 hours’ flight from Paris, the Prague-Copenhagen night train or our Interrail guide. If you are travelling solo, here are also the safest destinations for solo female travel.

Frequently asked questions

Is Nørrebro safe for tourists?

It is a busy residential district, lively by day and in the evening, and the sources I consulted describe it as animated. I have no verified crime statistics to give you: if the question worries you, check the official travel advice for Denmark and apply the usual habits of any big city.

How long should I allow to visit Nørrebro?

Half a day is enough to link Assistens, Jægersborggade and Superkilen on foot. Allow a full day if you add a lunch on Nørrebrogade and a bike tour, such as the guided tour to get your bearings.

Do I need to book a guided tour for Nørrebro?

No, everything is freely accessible. A guide mainly brings the history of migration, for example with Migrantour. On Viator, the only tour dedicated to the district that I found has just 22 reviews: see the practical section.

Are the tours in English?

Almost all the outings in this selection are guided in English, which is enough to get by in Copenhagen. A few listings do not state the commentary language (the Malmö and Sweden excursions), and the language of a slot is always worth checking at booking: I flag it in each card.

Can I combine Nørrebro with Malmö?

Yes. The train leaves the central station about every 20 minutes and takes 35 to 40 minutes. Take your passport or ID. If you prefer a guide, look at the Malmö and Lund excursion.

What is the best time to go?

All year round. In October, expect 7 to 13 °C and rain. Some outings on the water remain possible, with a boat that has heated seats, such as the electric boat trip.
